Evolving follow-on funding to realise new possibilities The Arts and Humanities Research Council’s (AHRC) follow-on funding (FoF) scheme is evolving. Find out what is changing, why it matters and how to apply.

Follow-on funding can be found for successful projects.

We also need capacity building to support a new generation of researchers.

Many of these interventions are ready to go, the challenge is now to implement them, a challenge not just for the research funding sector.

Jaideep wants to see the economic case aligned.

There is an absolute need to translate this research into value, and show how we can save in the future by investing now.

The scale and timing of interventions demands a broader understanding of the wider ecosystem.

Now Jaideep from AHRC acknowledges how #AMHDMshowcase shows that arts and humanities can transform mental health research.

Mental health is biopsychosocial, but it's also cultural. It is deeply meaningful to see this realised in such breadth and depth.

Smart Data Research UK Smart Data Research UK is the national programme for smart data research. Backed by government funding, we are part of the UKRI family.

Smart Data UK can help researchers to access big data collections, such as social media datasets.

These tools can help mental health researchers to generate some of the insights they were asking for in the previous session.

ESRC has been working on data infrastructure.

ADR-UK aims to transform public sector data into research and policy insights.

Similar work is ongoing in education and criminal justice.

Alison Park from the ESRC appreciates the interdisciplinary working and co-research with young people in #AMHDMshowcase

There is a clear commitment to impact, and improving the lives of young people.

The socioeconomic determinants of mental health lie squarely within ESRC's remit.

MRC strategy for lifelong mental health research This document explains MRC’s strategy for lifelong mental health research, examining its impact with an aim to treat and prevent mental health illnesses.

Mental health is a strategic priority for the MRC.

They continue to fund studies on mechanisms, and longitudinal cohort studies to collect data for the research of tomorrow.

Louise Jones from the Medical Research Council appreciates the amplified impact from youth researchers.

The MRC also appreciates working with ESRC and AHRC.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Essi would spend it on unravelling the individual differences in response to interventions.

Ulrike agrees, but would like to have a fund for implementation.

Ella would like to double the £35m, so that we CAN do implementation.

Is it ethical otherwise?

#AMHDMshowcase

"If you had £35m all over again, how would you spend it?"

Simon says it's more about what happens after. Allowing young people to lead doesn't have to cost the earth.

Kadra would also work with young people, especially charities, who struggle to evidence their work.

Our next question is about genetics: how will this field integrate with youth mental health research?

Essi says that interventions will most likely be environmental. Genetic studies will more be about predicting responses.

What is the UN Convention on Child Rights? The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is the basis for all of UNICEF's work and upholds the rights of ever child.

Kadra says that mental health impacts need to be included in all policies, such as housing, education.

Adopting the UNCRC would be a big step forward.

Simon comments that young people don't want their experiences medicalised.

Anxiety is a natural and probably normal reaction to these big issues such as Covid and climate change.

Here, validation is a key stepping stone, and then looking beyond the health system.

#AMHDMshowcase

Essi thinks that there has been a lot of internalising of this helplessness.

Studies have shown that volunteering has a very positive impact. Sharing experiences and putting your worries into perspective can help young people who experience this anxiety.

#AMHDMshowcase

Ulrike says that the sense of helplessness can be tackled by youth programmes that look to break down the enormity by bringing people together.

Tackle the big problems by breaking them into their parts.

#AMHDMshowcase

Q) If we were doing this research programme again, how would we bring in the big issues like climate change that affect young people?

Ella points out that agency is a protective factor, as is validation of youth experience. These are all tractable factors.

#AMHDMshowcase

We need to move beyond us telling young people what they need. As we have seen in this conference, young people really do have the solutions that we are looking for.

What policy makers would have the courage to hand over this power?

#AMHDMshowcase

SAMH SAMH is Scottish Action for Mental Health.

Simon says that the new school curriculum requires them to address mental health.

There is a need for evidence on the competing models for providing this support, such as SAMH's Nook

Are they working?

"What evidence do commissioners and policy makers need?"

Kadra says there is a review in progress which will inform decisions. The social media ban is currently under consultation. There is a "cliff edge" in policy, however.

We really need evidence here.

#AMHDMshowcase

Ella wants to see more recognition of the arts, which are underappreciated in the UK.

"Where can young people go?"

This stuff is tractable, and does not have to break the bank.

#AMHDMshowcase

Ulrike wants to see better economic modelling because the long term benefits of tackling the youth mental health crisis is not adequately represented in political decisions.

She would like to become better at speaking to those who hold the purse strings about this.
