Not everyone has access to clean indoor air. That's why CARB and local air districts created the California Clean Air Centers Map. Use it to find a safe place to go with filtered air during periods of intense wildfire smoke.

Haagen-Smit identified ground-level ozone as the primary cause—a lung irritant formed when sunlight hits pollution from cars & industry. It inflames airways & worsens asthma, especially in kids & older adults. His work laid the foundation for #AQAW2025 & air quality policies.

CARB’s first chair, Dr. Arie Haagen-Smit, made a groundbreaking discovery: smog wasn’t just a haze—it was caused by vehicle exhaust. His research on plant damage revealed that air pollution harms ALL living things, not just plants.

Infographic from the California Air Resources Board titled "DIY Air Cleaner Designs." It shows three types of air cleaners made with a 20"x20" box fan and MERV 13 air filters, labeled “Good,” “Better,” and “Best.”

Good: One filter attached to the back of a fan.

Better: Four filters forming a cube around the fan.

Best: Five filters forming a cube base with the fan on top for optimal airflow.
Materials listed: 20"x20" box fan (2012 or newer), 20"x20" MERV 13 air filters (1–5), duct tape or bungee cords, and optional cardboard for a shroud.
