You just proven you're wrong
There were many languages that served as 'Lingua Franca', proofs they are or were living languages. Let's see: Middle-East & Mediterranean:
Nearly extinct:
#Aramaic
#Latin
Living languages:
#Greek
#Hebrew 3200 years old, only Canaanite languages still used
#Arabic
Finally made the connection between Imperial #Aramaic לחן 'temple servant', feminine לחנה,* and Biblical and later Aramaic לְחֵנָה 'concubine', 'wench' or something like that.
* That's 𐡋𐡇𐡍 and 𐡋𐡇𐡍𐡄 for my fellow Unicode freaks

From a set of about 50 mostly #Aramaic graffiti from Hama, Syria, before the Assyrians destroyed it in 720 BCE. These two write place names: Hama itself (Hamath), in pretty old-fashioned letters (c. 925–850?), and Qarqar, site of the famous 853 BCE battle between the Assyrians & a western coalition.
I'm learning #Akkadian, and whatever happy neurochemical is prompted by recognizing old friends, I love that seeing a cognate for a term I already know in a different Semitic language triggers the same response.

Why hello, old חקל!

Good to see you again, שמע!

Queen Zenobia's Last Look Upon Palmyra (1888) by Herbert Gustave Schmalz. The 3rd century ruler of the short-lived Palmyrene Empire challenged the Roman Empire. She reigned over the Levant, much of Anatolia, northern Iraq, northwest Arabia and Egypt.

Table with Jewish (LXX, Rabbinic), Syriac, Samaritan, and Arabic letter names. The reconstructed forms are *ʾā́lap; *bēt; *gī́mal; *dā́lat; *hē; *wāw; *zay(n); *ḥēt; *ṭēt; *yōd, *yōt; *kap; *lā́mad, *lā́bad; *mīm, *mēm; *nūn; *simkat; *ʿayn; *pē; *ṣādē; *qōp; *rēš; *šīn; *tāw.
Hey, I reconstructed some #Aramaic letter names! Going back to around 500 BCE, I guess. The similarity to #Greek is usually explained via #Phoenician, but we don't actually have any Phoenician letter names AFAIK.
Nice overview of some #Aramaic script types.
#TIL "the LORD of Hosts" (𐡉𐡄𐡄 𐡑𐡁𐡀𐡕, [yh]h ṣbʾt) is attested as a divine name on an #Aramaic ostracon from Elephantine. (First line, starting with the second 𐡄.)

Imperative (ms.) ʾəḥod or ʾeḥod ʾəkul or ʾekul ʾəmar or ʾemar ʾizel or ʾezel
Do we know why Targumic #Aramaic has אִיזֵל for the imperative 'go' and not אְזֵל**? Dissimilation? ASsimilation?
These people are so dumb 🙄

As I have noted in the past, there's a picturesque image in Talmudic #Aramaic: "istra belagina kish kish karya," a coin in an empty jar makes a lot of noise.
The classic Hebrew phrase for "much ado about nothing" has a nice rhyme: "mehuma raba `al lo meuma" (or "`al lo davar", but no rhyme there)

Galilean Aramaic
Steve Caruso recently created a site with his Galilean Aramaic grammar: galileanaramaic.com
Also: learn.galileanaramaic.com
I've been checking it out a bit over the past few days and enjoying it. I figure some of y'all might like it as well. :)

Biblical #Aramaic phrase of the day: עַתִּיק יוֹמַיָּא ʕattīq yōmayyā (indefinite: עַתִּיק יוֹמִין ʕattīq yōmīn)
First, the text mentions 𐢘𐢊𐢅 {𐢃}[𐢕𐢌] 𐢃𐢗𐢑𐢕𐢞𐢔 pḥd {b}[ny] bʿlntn, which Nehmé reads as 'the tribal group [of] the sons of Bʿlntn'. pḥd is then interpreted as #Arabic faḫḏ-, something like a clan. If so, that's a previously unknown Arabic loanword in Nabataean #Aramaic.

Levantine #Arabic uses ʕala, ʕa- for both 'on' and 'to', like #Aramaic ʕal. Pat-El and Stokes don't discuss this (I think, quickly scanned the paper), but seems like a good candidate for a substrate feature? The same use of ʕal for 'to' can be found in Aramaic-influenced #Hebrew, like in Jeremiah.
