#ASECS2024 Finally, I want to record my debt to the WPHP womensprinthistoryproject.com for all the help it gave to my own research on 1771 : digitalcommons.usf.edu/abo/vol12/is...

#ASECS2024 also, a key value for this scholarship is transparency, as @lmaruca.bsky.social reminded us, bc the goal was not irrefutable assignments, but recording decisions leading to attributions, for others to follow or not

#ASECS2024 unlike most lit or formalist analyses, treating the literary as just one more category of genres meant taking up purpose, form, content in that order; it also meant making situation and audience as explicit as possible, even if these were tacit or partly submerged in texts

2 0 0 1

#ASECS2024 Our aha! moment was realizing the most important differences were about purpose, not form, esp w/texts bordering the non-literary, like memoirs; this was reaffirmed by looking at Bhatia, Miller, Swales & other sociolinguists who had tackled genre in their fields

2 0 0 1

#ASECS2024 what my 1771 project learned in our own dataset was that making the process collective, deliberative, & recursive reduced our anxieties about subjective judgments; it encouraged talking through differences & constructing protocols to deal w/small sometimes tacit distinctions

#ASECS2024 Since I sometimes use bsky as a sketchpad, I wanted to record this response to the excellent presentation of Sharren & Moffatt on the generic classifications in the @thewphp.bsky.social; I thought it focused usefully on the interpretive problem of genre labels in these datasets

My favourite part of an enjoyable #ASECS2024 was M. Nourbese Philip's reading of her amazing ZONG!. At the session's end, audience members read aloud themselves from scraps of a scissored-up photocopy of its pages left on our chairs; each scrap was different.
The choral cacophony was deeply moving.

Fantastic #asecs2024 panel on banking and one that convinces me that the humanists have always had the best angles on capitalism (i.e. money is a weird, dumb story we tell ourselves). #c18

#ASECS2024 email says the conference dress is "casual." Wondering how serious I should take this suggestion -- maybe no jacket? No tie? No suit? Ah, I've got it. . .
