Fin-tastic week at #ASFB2025 in Darwin! Huge thank you to the Aussie Fish Biology community for such a warm welcome. Glad I could bring some #deepsea to the proceedings
💭 Already missing the #ASFB2025 conference in #Darwin? Here are some memories of the fantastic #fish #fashion on show in the Top End last week 👕 🐠 👗🦈
The stunning artworks were such a thoughtful gift for the awesome plenary speakers, and reflected the highly inclusive nature of this year’s #ASFB2025 conference in Darwin.. such a great week focussed on fish, fisheries and the people that depend on them 🐟🦀🦑 #MarineLife
Following a hugely successful #ASFB2025 in tropical #Darwin, we’ve got an even cooler (in one sense, at least) location for #ASFB2026…
We hope to see you in #Hobart, #Tasmania!

A highlight of #ASFB2025 was the “Connecting Waters – Connecting Culture” session, part of ASFB’s commitment to the contribution of Indigenous, Torres Strait Islander and First Nations people globally to research, water and fish.
Many connections were made over research and connection to Country.
And finally, at #ASFB2025…
The conference dinner at #Darwin’s Mindil Beach Casino.

We’re very grateful to Elah Yunupingu for providing unique artworks as a thank you to all our plenary speakers at #ASFB2025.
Each artwork depicts a different fish, which is exactly the kind of biodiversity we love! 🐟 💙
Alexandre Siqueira, winner of ASFB’s Early Career Excellence Award, provides the final plenary of #ASFB2025.
🪸🐠 A truly time-bending look at how reef ecosystems have transformed over millions of years. Plus a fun comparison of biodiversity in Australia and his native Brazil!
Alison King gives the penultimate plenary of #ASFB2025. This looked at research into environmental flow as a management tool in Australia’s freshwater systems.
Massive advances now give confidence that this strategy is working. But several challenges face native freshwater fishes in future

🎉👏 Congratulations to Professor Iain Suthers, who has received the ASFB’s most prestigious accolade, the K. Radway Allen Award🏅
His #ASFB2025 plenary speech ranged widely, from fisheries pioneer Harald Dannevig, eastern Australia’s “eddy avenue”, and novel fishways for native freshwater fishes🐟

How many meals did a #fish eat today? What energy did it gain from that? Did it use that energy to travel up a fishway?
For today’s first #ASFB2025 plenary, Timothy Clark discussed some of the powerful technology used in tagging to give us better understanding of fish than ever before.

💡An amazing, dynamic poster session concluded Day 2 of #ASFB2025
This is a chance for scientists to share their findings one-to-one in a more informal setting. Posters featured corallivorous butterflyfishes, identification of shark fins, and an intriguing wirrah love triangle, and much more📃🐟

The student mixer, a highlight of our conferences!
It brings together fish scientists at the start of their careers with more experienced attendees – many still have relationships with folks they met at ASFB when they were students!
Huge thanks to @frdc.bsky.social for sponsoring 🙏🐟 #ASFB2025
Today’s second #ASFB2025 plenary was from Madeline Green, who took us from her fishing-obsessed childhood to current research using molecular monitoring to help manage fisheries 🧬🎣
Madeline received the ASFB’s ERC International Travel Award, allowing her to visit Iceland to present her research ✈️
Kenny Bedford and Natasha Stacey give an insightful plenary on their work with Torres Strait Islanders to produce a fishing app, via workshops in 15 communities.
“We need to be giving useful information back,” says Kenny. “An app like this empowers communities to make informed decisions." #ASFB2025

🐟What stories do you tell about your research?
🐟What stories are you listening to?
🐟Could you be listening differently?
🐟What stories do we need to tell together?
Questions posed in a thought-provoking start to #ASFB2025 from Jess Melbourne-Thomas, on science storytelling in a challenging future.
A social scientists presents a slide from a stage showing the climate bands for her grandmother, her mother, herself, and her children, demonstrating the changes in climate faced by different generations in her family
I was really moved by this figure from @drjessmt.bsky.social’s keynote address this morning at #ASFB2025
These changes are occurring faster and faster, with future generations facing #climatechange conditions that would be unthinkable to their ancestors, visualizing it like this makes it personal 🔥
