The book THE GIRL WAKES: STORIES by Carmen Lau. Cover illustration is a sketched close-up of a girl’s head but her eyes are out of frame. Her mouth is the only thing colored in, and it’s smeared with pink across as if ambiguous whether it’s stained with blood or lipstick. The same pink is used in the swooping calligraphy of the title.
Got this book from @altcurrent.bsky.social at #AWP25 and ate it up like a meal.
THE GIRL WAKES by Carmen Lau is beautifully written. Gorgeous prose, dark edges, haunting whimsy. Feels like reading dark fairy tales or Wonderland again but subtly woven into modern settings.

Poetry collection book. ALL THE BLOOD INVOLVED IN LOVE by Maya Marshall. On the cover, a Black woman in a white lace dress wears a fluffy white sheep mask/head over her head. She is tenderly taking care of a black wig on an ironing board. Both textures are fluffy. The lighting is dim and pensive.
Loved this evocative, brutal, and tender poetry collection ALL THE BLOOD INVOLVED IN LOVE by Maya Marshall. So glad I came across @haymarketbooks.org at #AWP25 ❤️

Poetry book with red-orange background. On the cover is a beautiful illustration of a snake twined territorially and comfortably at the top of a tree, jaw wide open and fangs bared, startling a black and white bird. A rattle behind it is raised high. Two other birds are perched on different twigs of this spindly treetop branch. The snake almost seems to be protecting the bird greyer bird perched right by it.
I’m in awe. & beginning yesterday morning with the “Queerness of Eve” section colored the rest of my day in this open, lovely light.

Great to meet up with the stellar @clmporg.bsky.social core krewe of Chelsea, Alisa and Montana at #awp25! They make so much possible for independent publishers! We at The Fab are so grateful for all they do. Also complimenting their excellent choice in reading materials!
My #awp25 haul arrived. In my defense, I already owned two of these but brought them to LA to get them signed by the amazing @roxanegay.bsky.social, which Bluesky wants to change to “Amazon Roxane Gay” and that seems kinda awesome. (Please ignore mess behind books. Men turn feral in my absence.)
