In the dark welsh valley,
On the mountain side,
Lay the little children
Close to where they died.
Their little lives are ended
Before they reach their goal,
Tender little children
Have paid the price of coal.
Aberfan 21-10-66
The day the NCB got away with murder

In 1967 zongen de @beegees "New York mining disaster 1941". Maar in 1941 was daar geen mijnramp. De inspiratiebron was de mijnramp op 21 oktober 1966 bij Aberfan in Wales waarbij 144 mensen om het leven kwamen. #AberfanDisaster youtu.be/S43YhQ_eGTw?...

59 years ago today we witnessed the Aberfan disaster where 116 children & 28 adults perished. A wholly avoidable event that was predicted & anticipated by the whole village.
This tragedy played large in my childhood as I was recovering from a life threatening accident. I was 12.
Luckily I survived but my abiding memory when I first woke up was the terrible black & white images that have haunted me and the survivors in Aberfan since that day.
A minutes silence this morning seems such a small thing in the scheme of things. It's still close to home for me, always reminds me I'm still here. Thoughts are with the families & survivors today 59 years on. This evocative poem by Chris Peregrine
chris.peregrine@swwmedia.co.uk/ @Perers71
sums it up.

ON THE HILL
Disaster comes
As no surprise
To heaven
That ticking bomb of slurry
On the hill
Came down to bury
Children of eleven
And leave
A happy valley
Cold and still
They danced their way to school
That very morning
Their laughter disappearing
In the mist
Their bodies disappearing
Without warning
Fresh faces newly washed
And newly kissed
There is a court convening
In the ether
To try the people
Of the NCB
Who knew about the watercourse
Beneath the
Mounting slag
But strove indifferently
They're ready now to greet you
Smiling still
That row of angels sleeping
On the hill
