Nat Turner and his followers deliberately avoided using firearms during their 1831 rebellion, relying instead on axes, hatchets, and knives. This strategy was both practical and tactical—gunfire would have quickly alerted nearby slaveholders and militias, jeopardizing their mission before they could gain momentum. By using silent, close-combat weapons, the rebels were able to move stealthily from plantation to plantation, initially catching their targets off guard. This method also reflected the rebels’ limited access to firearms, as enslaved individuals were generally prohibited from owning or handling guns. Despite their strategic approach, the rebellion was ultimately suppressed within two days as armed white militias mobilized against them. However, the uprising sent shockwaves through the South, intensifying fears of future revolts and leading to harsher restrictions on enslaved and free Black communities.
6. The rebellion was fought using axes, hatchets, and knives to avoid drawing attention with gunfire.
