Ever catch yourself doubting your place in the lab or at a conference? It happens a lot in early research. What practical habits or support have actually helped you build real confidence? Small steps count more than we think 💡 #AcademicMentalHealth #ItzikThoughtLoop
Imposter syndrome is common in early research. Comparing your work to others is easy, but building skills takes steady practice and real feedback. Honest conversations with mentors can help untangle doubt from progress. 💡 #AcademicMentalHealth #ItzikThoughtLoop

While institutions make a big thing about #AcademicMentalHealth and #wellbeing, very often there's no specific responsibility for pastoral roles or dedicated spaces.
So nobody has control over where support is provided. Often it's not even a room. Particularly not in shared/open plan offices.
"For me, success is getting seven to eight hours of sleep every night, having a little bit more balance, going to Pilates class twice a week... Take your annual leave. Don't feel guilty about it."

We need to stop whispering about depression, anxiety, and impostor syndrome in academia.
Unrealistic expectations & silence don’t make it easier—honest conversations do.
You belong here. Your mental health matters.

For anyone interested in #AcademicMentalHealth note how this area is deeply political and yet many trainers, experts and speakers hired by institutions knot themselves into a pretzel to avoid appearing political, or mention or challenge what is causing or worsening mental distress in universities.
