Stepdad of child who shot self: ‘It broke us mentally; we want our boy home’ A Madison Heights couple whose son got ahold of one of their guns and shot himself was sentenced Monday in Oakland County Circuit Court. Jacob Gean and Jessie Gean were sentenced by Judge David Cohen to time served in the Oakland County Jail and two years probation for the accidental shooting last August. The child, 9 years old at the time, shot off his fingertip at the family’s home on Palmer Street. Addressing the court prior to sentencing, Jacob Gean — the child’s stepfather — apologized for the shooting, which he said has devastated the family. The couple’s children were removed from their home, and reunification will be determined by Oakland County Family Court Judge Lisa Gorcyca. “Me and my wife sincerely regret what happened,” Jacob Gean said, choking up and then composing himself. “This is very hard for me and my wife. The boy is everything to us … what happened — it broke us, mentally at that time,” he said. “We apologize and regret what happened. We’re sorry, sorry to our son, sorry for everything. We just want our boy home, your honor.” Jacob Gean and attorney Sherman Abdo, appearing in court via Zoom for Monday’s sentencing hearing.                      Jessie Gean declined to speak to the court before sentencing was handed down. In February, the Geans pleaded no contest to violating Michigan’s safe storage law. They were each charged with a felony because the shooting involved a minor and resulted in injury. The crime is punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of $5,000. Jacob Gean’s attorney, Sherman Abdo, told the court that the Geans had kept all their firearms locked up in a safe — except the one the child had shot himself with — and have since removed all firearms from their home and the gun safe. He also said Jacob Gean had raised the child “like his own son” and had been involved with him for most of his life. The Geans, Abdo said, took two parenting classes following the shooting, one as ordered through Children’s Protective Services and the other voluntarily. Jessie Gean’s attorney, Gil McRipley, told the judge that the shooting was “a regrettable situation … an eye-opening situation.” “The main thing is (they) learn from what happened and try to reunite with their son,” McRipley said. Cohen said while the law “takes this kind of manner very seriously,” the Geans have already paid a “high penalty” with their children taken out of their home. “The court hopes with sincerity there’s reunification of the family through the appropriate process,” Cohen said. “We have a loving family here. This is a great tragedy … and a lesson to be learned.” As part of the sentencing, Jacob Gean is required to maintain employment and Jessie Gean is to pursue a GED or other education. Among the other sentencing orders is for the couple to comply with the family court judge as they pursue the children being returned to their home. Michigan’s safe storage law went into effect in 2024. It requires unattended weapons to be unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked container “if it is reasonably known that a minor is likely to be present on the premises,” the law states.
