Parts of Oshikoto affected by planned water outage Niël Terblanché The Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) announced a planned water supply shutdown in parts of the Oshikoto region from midnight on Monday until midnight on Tuesday.  NamWater spokesperson Lot Ndamanomhata said the shutdown will affect all distribution pipelines connected to the Onembenge 2nd Tower. “This means that all communities supplied by the Omulingi-Okakodhi-Ontana rural pipeline network, including all associated sub-branch lines, will be impacted,” he said.  Ndamanomhata explained that the interruption is needed to upgrade the distribution network and remove bottleneck fittings at the tower. “These essential works are part of NamWater’s efforts to improve flow efficiency and enhance service reliability ahead of the anticipated high-water demand during the upcoming drought season,” he said.  He urged residents in the affected areas to store enough water before the outage and advised institutions such as hospitals, schools, clinics, and police stations to contact NamWater representatives for assistance during the shutdown. “NamWater sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by this necessary maintenance and appreciates your patience and cooperation as we work to improve water service delivery,” Ndamanomhata added.

Oshikoto prepares for water shutdown Communities relying on the Omulungi-Okakodhi-Ontana rural pipeline network in the Oshikoto region will be without water for two days from Monday. Those depending on the associated sub-branch lines will also be affected. NamWater announced the planned water shutdown for the rural water pipeline on Friday. Spokesperson Lot Ndamanomhata says the shutdown will allow upgrading of the distribution network and the removal of bottleneck fittings at the Onembenge second tower. “These essential works are part of NamWater’s efforts to improve flow efficiency and enhance service reliability ahead of the anticipated high water demand during the upcoming drought season,” he says. The water utility is advising all affected communities to store sufficient water in advance to cover the 48-hour period. Arrangements will be made for essential service institutions such as hospitals, schools, clinics and police stations in case they face critical water supply challenges, the spokesperson says. Omuthiya at a crossroads: A Call to rescue Oshikoto Isak Tuyoleni Haimbodi Omuthiya, the capital of the Oshikoto region, stands as a symbol of both promise and neglect. Despite its administrative status, the town suffers from poor infrastructure, limited economic activity, and a glaring absence of higher education institutions. Across the region, residents face crumbling roads, inadequate healthcare, and high unemployment, all worsened by political inaction. Oshikoto’s youth face major obstacles to accessing tertiary education. While most regions host institutions such as UNAM, NUST, or IUM, Omuthiya has none. A long-promised vocational training centre remains unrealised, despite land having been allocated. Only a few under-resourced private colleges operate in the town. Many students are forced to travel far to study, an expense most families cannot afford. Worse still, the shortage of hostels at secondary schools places rural learners at a disadvantage, with long commutes harming academic performance. The region’s deteriorating road network restricts access to schools, clinics, and markets. Farmers cannot move their produce efficiently, businesses face delays, and emergency services are often too late. This neglect in transport infrastructure hampers both development and daily life. Roads are vital, not a luxury. Omuthiya has serviced land available, yet it fails to attract meaningful investment. Job opportunities are scarce, leaving the youth with little choice but to migrate to other regions. The absence of major retail outlets, restaurants, and recreational spaces paints a picture of an economy in limbo. Without support for local entrepreneurs, the region’s stagnation will only worsen. Many Oshikoto residents must travel to the Oshana region for medical care. Local clinics are few and often under-equipped. The shortage of medical personnel and supplies is dire. Shockingly, even the regional education directorate still operates from Oshana, a clear indication of administrative failure and misplaced priorities. The slow pace of development in Omuthiya is a direct result of poor leadership. Residents have raised concerns for years, yet responses remain lukewarm. Leaders must shift focus from party politics to delivering real, measurable change for their communities. The Way Forward Reviving Oshikoto requires urgent government action, investment from the private sector, and active community engagement. Infrastructure must be upgraded, a long-delayed vocational centre built, healthcare improved, and local businesses supported. The people of Oshikoto deserve more than broken promises; they deserve results. Omuthiya must not be left behind any longer. The time to act is now. *Isak Tuyoleni Haimbodi is a concerned citizen and advocate for regional development. He writes in his personal capacity.

Former governor and businessman to construct community clinic in Oshikoto Former Ohangwena governor Usko Nghaamwa and prominent businessman Pinehas Nambadi will be constructing a community clinic at Omaimbi farm in the Amuteya district of the Ondonga Traditional Authority. According to Nghaamwa, the idea to build a clinic in this area of the Oshikoto region arose from the significant distances residents have to travel to access medical care. Nghaamwa revealed this on Saturday during a visit by Ondonga Traditional Authority King Fillemon Nangolo Shuumbwa to the farm. Nghaamwa explained that many people travel about seven kilometres to Oshivelo or 80 kilometres to Omuthiya to receive necessary healthcare services. “Nambadi generously donated the land on which the clinic will be constructed. The immediate needs for the project are concrete stones and sand for construction purposes,” he said. He added that the area is densely populated, and tragically, in numerous cases of illness, individuals do not survive the journey to the nearest clinic. Nghaamwa specifically highlighted the issue of snakebites, noting the loss of many young lives due to the challenges in accessing timely medical care. To date, a truckload of bricks has been delivered to the site, marking the commencement of the project. Meanwhile, Shuumbwa pledged his support towards the construction of the clinic and urged the community members to remain in unity and work hand in hand for the purpose of development. He also issued a strong caution to his community, urging them to be vigilant against individuals falsely claiming to be “prophets” who could potentially cause disruption and chaos. According to Shuumbwa, such individuals are not permitted within the Ondonga Traditional Authority if they lack proper authorisation. “If they don’t have proper documentation of any sort, and are not licensed accordingly, then chase them away and if they are being stubborn, call your leaders to deal with them,” he said. Oshikoto governor leads aerial health and livestock outreach Niël Terblanché A proactive approach, particularly in regions susceptible to climate-induced adversities, has once again pointed out the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing both human and animal health challenges. In this regard, Governor Sacky Kathindi, accompanied by a multidisciplinary team of medical, veterinary, and security personnel, embarked on an aerial survey across the Oshikoto Region this week. The mission aimed to assess the impact of recent flooding and to address ongoing health and livestock concerns in the area. Utilising a Namibian Police helicopter, the delegation conducted flyovers of flood-affected communities within the Cuvelai Basin catchment area. On the ground, veterinary teams vaccinated approximately 200 cattle against lumpy skin disease (LSD) and identified 10 animals exhibiting severe symptoms of the viral infection. “We are committed to supporting our farmers during this challenging time,” Kathindi said in a social media post. “The aerial survey allowed us to reach remote areas swiftly and provide necessary interventions,” he added. Medical personnel attended to 29 community members during the outreach, addressing various health concerns. “Fortunately, no malaria cases were diagnosed during this mission,” he said while adding that the absence of the disease offered a momentary reprieve amid a broader regional outbreak. Senior officers of the Namibian Police engaged with residents, discussing prevalent crimes and reinforcing community policing efforts. The outreach continued on Thursday, with visits to communities in the Omuntele Constituency, including the government stock pens at Onashuulu Omanga Yepangelo. Here, cattle farmers were reminded to present their livestock promptly for LSD vaccinations. Lumpy skin disease remains a pressing concern in Namibia. Since November, the Oshikoto Region has reported 196 cases and 43 cattle deaths attributed to LSD. The Directorate of Veterinary Services has implemented stringent measures, including mandatory vaccinations for cattle intended for export, to curb the spread of the disease. Northern Namibia is also currently grappling with a malaria outbreak. As of March 9, the Ministry of Health and Social Services reported over 20 000 cases nationwide, with 44 fatalities. The most affected districts include Katima Mulilo, Andara, Nkurenkuru, Outapi, Engela, Eenhana, Okongo, and Nyangana.

Iifo appointed as Oshikoto police commander Police inspector general Joseph Shikongo has appointed commissioner Ndafudha Iifo to serve as commander for the Oshikoto region from 1 May. According to national police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, Shikongo announced some changes in police management on 16 April, all effective from 1 May. Shikwambi says Iifo was promoted from deputy commissioner to commissioner and transferred from the training and development directorate at the Ruben Danger Ashipala Police Training Centre in the Oshana region to serve as regional commander for Oshikoto. The current commander, commissioner Theopoline Kalompho-Nashikaku, has been transferred from the Oshikoto regional headquarters and appointed as head of the directorate of crime prevention at the national police headquarters in Windhoek. Kalompho-Nashikaku is replacing commissioner Tylvis Kampolo, who is heading into retirement at the end of April. Further, chief inspector Chairmane Uahindua has been promoted to the rank of deputy commissioner and transferred from the field training sub-division, training and development directorate, and appointed as commandant of the Ruben Danger Ashipala Police Training Centre. Shikwambi says Uahindua replaces Iifo. “Commissioner Moritz !Naruseb is transferred from the directorate of police conduct and investigation and appointed as head of the directorate of criminal investigation at the national police headquarters,” she says. Iifo told Nampa she plans to enhance public safety through effective policing within the region by leading the team to reduce crime and building a culture of fairness. The incoming regional commander says they will build strong relationships between the police and community, which is called community policing. “I will focus more on awareness pertaining to crime reduction and prevention as well as community engagement,” she says. The Namibian Police commander for the Oshikoto region, commissioner Theopoline Kalompho-Nashikaku, on Saturday said the incident occurred around 11h00 on the B15 road, about six kilometres from the Tsintsabis settlement. The deceased were identified as the driver of the vehicle, Kandjimi Hailwa, and passenger Petrus Hafeni. Both were from Tsumeb, and their next of kin have been informed. Kalompho-Nashikaku said the driver of the silver hatchback was driving from Tsumeb towards Tsintsabis with four passengers on board. “The driver appeared to have lost control over the vehicle in a curve, whereby the vehicle went off the road, resulting in it overturning and rolling twice before it came to a standstill on its roof,” she described. “The driver died [at the scene], while the passenger died upon arrival at Tsintsabis clinic,” Kalompho-Nashikaku said. The other three passengers were also taken to Tsintsabis clinic with serious injuries. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Tsumeb State Hospital mortuary pending autopsies. Oshikoto hungry to become number one in high school education again with holiday classes The Oshikoto Regional Directorate of Education, Arts and Culture has introduced interventions to improve the performance of pupils in the region. Acting director of education Thomas Kalimbo said during the Onankali Circuit Annual Award Ceremony held at Nyambali Secondary School on Friday that they are implementing interventions to retain the number one position in the Grade 11 regional rankings achieved with last year’s results. In the 2024 academic year, the region achieved the top ranking for Grade 11 (ordinary level) results, while it was ranked fourth in Grade 12 “We would like to appreciate the effort and hard work of our teachers, school principals, heads of departments and all stakeholders for this good performance,” Kalimbo said. Kalimbo stated that the directorate is rolling out and executing interventions aimed at sustaining the strong Grade 11 results and improving Grade 12 performance at national level. “We will undertake holiday classes for Grade 10, 11 and 12 to go the extra mile,” he said. He added that teachers will also be conducting weekend classes for additiona support. “Capacity building and workshops on various subjects and grades are also planned to upskill our teachers so they deliver quality teaching,” said Kalimbo. He further noted that individual schools have also devised intervention strategies, which the directorate will support. Oshikoto’s Omuntele constituency councillor, Sackeus Nangula, called on parents of pupils at Nyambali Secondary School to assist in building a hostel at the school. “We should build a hostel for our pupils to study hard and become number one in the circuit as they are currently performing academically low in the circuit,” said Nangula. The award ceremony recognises the best performing schools, teachers and pupils in the circuit. Oshikoto has a total of eight circuits, with the Onyaanya circuit ranking first in the 2024 Grade 11 performance, while Onkumbula ranked last.
