When Adalyn returned to Camp Dragonhead that very evening, still reeling from the events of the day, Haurchefant took one look at her haggard appearance and whisked her away to draw her a bath. “Emmanellain made mention he saw you in Ul’dah this afternoon,” Haurchefant said, rolling his tunic’s sleeves to his elbows as Adalyn sank into the hot water with a noiseless groan. “Along with Francel and Lord Charlemend. It sounds like you have had quite the day!” Adalyn sighed heavily, letting her head fall back against the edge of the tub. Haurchefant sat on the floor beside her head, reaching out to cradle her face, and his thumb brushed gently against her cheek. “Even with airship travel making the journey across Eorzea but a trifle, I’m sure you are quite relieved for a moment to catch your breath,” he murmured. “Forgive me for so saying, my dearest, but you look terrible.” Adalyn laughed at that, turning her head to press a kiss to Haurchefant’s palm. His hands were well-callused from years of training, but they were always ever so gentle with her. Her smile faded against Haurchefant’s hand, and she drew back with a sigh, closing her eyes. She felt Haurchefant set to work on undoing her ponytail and braids, his fingers deft as they worked through the woven strands, offering her scalp blessed relief.
“If you are so inclined, I would love dearly to hear about your day,” Haurchefant said into the silence. “However did you find yourself in such unusual company?” “Francel is your friend,” Adalyn said, fingerspelling out Francel’s name before flicking water droplets at Haurchefant’s nose. He chuckled, brushing them away. “And besides, I have been seeing more of both him and Aurvael both with the Diadem project.” She opened her eyes; Haurchefant caught her look and smiled down at her, though his fingers never stilled in combing through her hair. “Francel mentioned Charlemend was his uncle?” Haurchefant nodded. “Aye—Francel is named after him, as a matter of fact, did you know? Joachin Charlemend Francel de Haillenarte.” “I could not for the life of me remember all the names that blasted inquisitor rattled off,” Adalyn admitted. “Besides, it was moons ago.” “I would be most surprised if you remembered,” Haurchefant said. “But yes, the Countess Melisende de Haillenarte is Count Charlemend’s sister. Shall I wash your hair?” Adalyn obligingly sat up, ducking her head forward for Haurchefant to pour water over her head. The sudden heat made goosebumps erupt up her arms, and she shivered, gratefully accepting the washcloth Haurchefant handed her to wipe her face. “Only you would be able to feel cold in a scalding bath,” Haurchefant teased, lathering soap between his fingers. Adalyn gestured rudely over her shoulder, which got a proper laugh out of him. She closed her eyes again as he began scrubbing at her hair, relishing the sensation. If it pleased Haurchefant to bathe her, well, she certainly wasn’t about to complain.
