"Improving GP Education" for Addison’s Disease Day. Text reads: We’re thrilled to have worked on the new BMJ Learning e-learning course for GPs, to ensure they are aware of the correct management of Addison’s disease and adrenal insufficiency. This course offers a practical guide for GPs, providing them with vital knowledge on the emergency treatment of Addisonian (adrenal) crisis along with key management essentials, such as the need to prescribe three months of essential steroid medication. This is to keep you safe through an episode of illness which requires increased Sick Day Rule dosing to prevent an adrenal crisis. This is the second CPD module we have co-authored to improve GP education. Help us spread the word - let your GP know about these e-modules! Download our poster to share with your GP practice, or send them the links on our website.

"The Sick Day Rules" for Addison’s Disease Day. It explains when the body experiences either physical or severe emotional stress, it needs more cortisol than usual. As a result, you will need to take extra medication on top of your usual daily dose to meet the increased cortisol need. This extra medication is known as following the Sick Day Rules and is also referred to as ‘stress dosing’ or ‘updosing’. The Sick Day Rules guidelines have been developed by clinicians to help keep you safe and reduce the chances of an adrenal crisis. As everyone’s medication needs are different, they are guidance rather than concrete rules. This can be tricky! Individuals learn to “listen to their body”, tailoring how much extra cortisol medication they need based on how they feel. There is also a lack of awareness of the impact seemingly minor ailments, such as vomiting or flu, can have on anyone with a steroid-dependent adrenal condition.
Informational graphic titled "What is Addison's disease & adrenal insufficiency?" for Addison’s Disease Day. It explains that Addison’s disease (AD) and adrenal insufficiency (AI) are rare, life-threatening conditions affecting adrenal gland function. Lifelong steroid hormone replacement is required. Individuals must follow Sick Day Rules and know how to use emergency hydrocortisone injections to prevent adrenal crisis. The graphic highlights the importance of patients becoming expert self-advocates due to healthcare professionals often being unfamiliar with the condition. Visuals include a calendar marked May 29, adrenal gland illustration, steroid emergency card, injection kit, and a patient diagram.
