People forget that before he was an ageing action hero, Liam Neeson was a young-ish superhero. I’d have been well up for this with Sam Raimi at the helm, but it clearly didn’t leave much of an impression despite my appetite for this sort of thing at the time.

The ticket says Highlander but I'm pretty sure this would have been for Highlander II: The Quickening, which Is a shame because Highlander is brilliant, whilst Highlander II: The Quickening is widely regarded as one of the worst films ever made.

Modelling themselves after an idyllic cookie-cutter suburban 1950s family, a colony of insects move from South America into the United States with the intent of getting access to the nation's nuclear resources. Hard to see Michael Lehmann’s post-Heathers follow-up getting made now.

Don’t think you’re allowed to like Gérard Depardieu films anymore, but I remember liking this one at the time.

Having just completed the US iVISA form process, I’m not entirely sure why anyone would want to put themselves through that.

From what I can tell this was Christopher Guest’s first produced screenplay after This Is Spinal Tap, and also his feature directorial debut. Not the first film about Hollywood, but one of the earlier ones to take aim at the whole notes-and-executives circus.

Once again we’re safely in late 80s/early 90s territory with this Nora Ephron-penned Steve Martin/Rick Moranis mob comedy. The New York Times called it “a truly funny concept and a disappointment on the screen”, which probably explains why I barely remember it.

I enjoyed this far more than the recent Masters of the Air TV series. Great cast, great characters, great story. Michael Caton-Jones is another one of those directors who seemed destined for greatness but somehow faded away.

This low-budget debut from Richard Stanley was absolute catnip to me and my mates in the early 90s. We were convinced he was going to be the next James Cameron. Then The Island of Dr. Moreau more or less killed his career.

The director of The Empire Strikes Back plus RoboCop. What could possibly go wrong?

Quite a lot, apparently. I haven’t watched this since and I’m not sure a revisit would change my view that it was a massive disappointment.

Is this remembered as a classic? It was huge back in the day. Not really my kind of thing, but one of those you went to see because everyone else was. I do wonder how many people under 30 would recognise that pottery scene now.

I respect David Lynch more than I’ve enjoyed most of his films. For me this was one of the good ones, arriving just as he suddenly had a much bigger audience — fresh off the Palme d’Or at Cannes and with Twin Peaks becoming a huge hit on television.

No recollection of this one, but Rosanna Arquette certainly seemed to be everywhere in the early ’90s. I was also surprised to discover it was directed by Mike Hodges — he of Get Carter and Flash Gordon fame.

Seems that John Waters job in the 80s & 90s was to produce under performing movies that went on to become hit broadway musicals.

No idea where I saw this, but I do know that innocent is spelt with two Ns. For me this is much better than the recent TV adaptation, which took eight hours to tell the same story this film managed perfectly well in two. A parable for our times — the runtime that is, not the movie.

I’ve never been a huge fan of westerns, but I make an exception for this. A wonderful conclusion to the second-best trilogy in cinema history.

I remember absolutely buzzing walking out of the cinema after this. I love a film that messes with your sense of reality. I’ve never really been an Arnie fan, but with RoboCop and then this, Paul Verhoeven was elevated to near-God status in my book.

Hard to believe now, but we were almost as excited about Dick Tracy as we were about Batman. All the ingredients were there. Somehow it still fell flat. Wikipedia claims it has a cult following — I’m not convinced.
