9 Jan– #Agonalia in honour of Janus #Roman god of beginnings, transitions & endings - with two faces looking to past & future. An ancient festival, its meaning was already unclear in antiquity, but still carefully observed. A ram was sacrificed by the Rex Sacrorum at the Regia in the Forum Romanum.

11 Dec marks the #Agonalia - a #Roman religious observance relating to #Sol Indiges (the personification of the sun as a god) & Septimontium (a festival commemorating the formation of Rome). It invoked a sense of unity, gratitude & joy.

🐏 #OnThisDay 21 May #Romans marked the #Agonalia a festival honouring underworld gods. A ram was sacrificed, with priests asking “Agone?” (“Shall I strike?”).
Said to be founded by Numa Pompilius & held on:
