“We remember Ahmaud Arbery Shot and killed in Brunswick, Georgia 02.23.2020 momsdemandaction.org 12:04 • Facebook Photo Liked by haleybooyah and others momsdemand On this day five years ago, 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery was pursued, shot, and killed by three white men while jogging near his home in Glynn County, Georgia. His killers attempted to use the state's Shoot First law as a defense, but they were eventually convicted of murder and federal hate crimes. Ahmaud's family remembers him as a loving son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend who "left an impact on countless Georgians and Americans." Ahmaud's aunt, Theawanza Brooks, said he had "a smile that will light the world in the dark." Ahmaud's senseless murder highlights the dangers of Shoot First laws, which encourage armed vigilantism, particularly against Black people. These laws are associated with increases in homicide rates, resulting in 700 additional homicides each year. We hold Ahmaud's loved ones in our hearts today and every day, and recommit to fighting back against racist gun laws that put communities of color at risk. ^
