De IJsvogel leeft in de omgeving van water. Ze hebben zich gespecialiseerd in het vangen van kleine vis. De visjes worden vanaf een zitpost vlak boven het water op zicht gelokaliseerd. Met een duik vanaf de zitpost wordt de vis gevangen.
