The phylogenetic position of #diadectids on the tetrapod evolutionary tree has big implications for our understanding of how the first #amniotes (animals that lay eggs independent of water) evolved. As such, these strange plant eaters are of great interest!

Diadectids are somewhat enigmatic animals as it’s not quite certain what they actually are, because early tetrapod evolutionary relationships are still being worked out. Currently it’s thought diadectids are either close precursors to #amniotes or some of the very first amniotes.
