Exceptional #fossils provide evidence for co-existence of epidermal and dermal scales in late Carboniferous stem #amniotes.

It was a great day @pdncambridge.bsky.social presenting my research focussing on the evolution of morphogenesis across #amniotes that my emerging group is based on
Thanks so much @boroviak.bsky.social for hosting me!

The phylogenetic position of #diadectids on the tetrapod evolutionary tree has big implications for our understanding of how the first #amniotes (animals that lay eggs independent of water) evolved. As such, these strange plant eaters are of great interest!
🧵 End.
Diadectids are somewhat enigmatic animals as it’s not quite certain what they actually are, because early tetrapod evolutionary relationships are still being worked out. Currently it’s thought diadectids are either close precursors to #amniotes or some of the very first amniotes.

If we can figure out that #Primates came from Asia, then can put two & two together about the Region where #Amniotes evolved?

March issue: Secretoglobins (SCBBs), not just in mammals! Thought to be involved in human disease, they are found in turtles, crocs, lizards & birds 🐊 pointing to an origin in early amniotes
