Onionskin

Red sugar paper cover,
thin foolscap pages,
hand-typed,
spiral-bound,
50p of saved up pocket money
from the bargain bin
of a Glasthule book shop.

Poems about love and drink
and loss,
small ink drawings in the margins—faces of men,
bent trees,
spilt pints.

I read that pamphlet
till the binding cracked,
till the paper greased
translucent.

Those dark adult words,
the sadness of a man
whose name I forget,
whose book I’ve lost.
