A translucent, saucer-like marine animal floats against a deep black background. Its body looks almost like clear glass, with many fine lines radiating from the center to the edge, forming a delicate circular pattern. Resting on the upper surface of the bell is a tiny octopus — the male argonaut — pale and lightly speckled, appearing small compared with the jelly. Several small yellowish particles drift around the animal, and faint bluish highlights trace the jelly’s thin rim, giving the scene a soft, luminous quality.

A delicate, otherworldly marine creature floats against a completely black background, as if suspended in space. The animal is a transparent larval lobster, its body almost glass-clear so that many of its internal structures are faintly visible.

The lobster’s body is small and elongated, but it is surrounded by large, thin, circular plates or shields that look like translucent discs. These discs resemble tiny jellyfish bells and give the animal an alien, umbrella-like appearance. Extending from the body are many extremely long, spindly legs, each thin like threads of glass and dotted with tiny reflective points where the light catches.

At the front of the lobster, several jointed appendages are gripping a small, translucent shrimp. The shrimp hangs downward from the lobster’s grasp, its curved body limp as it is being eaten. The shrimp’s body is also see-through, with faint hints of pale blue and tiny orange spots near its head.

The lighting is bright and directional, highlighting the fragile, crystal-like anatomy of both animals while the surrounding water remains pitch black—typical of a blackwater dive where deep-sea creatures drift upward at night. The effect makes the lobster and its prey appear to glow softly in the darkness.

At the bottom of the image there is a small orange watermark that reads “© Gregory Rohlman 2023.”

Overall, the scene feels alien, delicate, and dramatic—a moment of predation captured among fragile, nearly invisible deep-ocean life.

A small octopus, Wunderpus
Photogenicus, floats alone in deep, dark water that looks completely black, as if it's suspended in space. Its body is delicate and semi-transparent, glowing softly in cool bluish tones under a focused light.
The octopus' head and eyes face toward the right side of the image.
Behind the head, its mantle-the rounded main body—appears expanded like a clear, jelly-like dome with a brighter, milky shape visible inside.
Eight thin arms spread outward and downward in graceful curves. Some arms curl into loose spirals, while two extend much longer than the others, trailing like fine ribbons. Along the arms are tiny pale suckers and scattered rust-colored speckles.
There is no visible seafloor or background detail—only the octopus illuminated against darkness—giving the scene a weightless, quiet feeling, as the animal is drifting gently in open ocean at night.

A tiny, translucent larval fish floats in dark open water. Its body is round and glassy with a faint pink-brown core. The eyes are large and forward-facing, giving a surprised expression. Wispy, delicate fins extend like soft feathers from the top and sides, catching the light against the black background so the animal appears suspended in space. Photo credit: ©Gregory Rothman 2024

Identification:
Larval stargazer (family Uranoscopidae).

Behavior & natural history (notable facts):
Adult lifestyle: Stargazers are benthic ambush predators that bury themselves in sand with only the eyes and upward-facing mouth exposed.
Feeding strategy: They lunge upward to capture fish and crustaceans; some species possess a worm-like lure inside the mouth to attract prey.
Electric capability: Several genera can produce mild electric shocks for defense.
Larval phase: Unlike the bottom-dwelling adults, larvae are pelagic, drifting in the plankton.
Ontogenetic shift: As they grow, they settle to the seafloor and develop the robust head and upward-oriented gaze characteristic of the group.

This blackwater photography image, taken in Anilao, showcases a larval-stage lobster floating in the open ocean. The lobster is nearly transparent, with a delicate, elongated body and intricate appendages. Its segmented exoskeleton reveals an internal orange-hued organ, possibly its digestive system. One of its most striking features is its large, reflective eye, which gleams against the pitch-black background. The lobster’s delicate legs and swimmerets extend outward, highlighting the fragility of this early life stage. The photograph beautifully captures the ethereal and otherworldly nature of marine larvae in the open water. Copyright Gregory Rothman 2024

Went on a blackwater dive.
Saw a Speck.
Looked Closer.
It wasn’t a Speck!
It was a Lobsta.
Larval Lobsta!
Oohah

A late larval lobster. I assume close to settling. Earlier larval stages look likeflat spiders.
