A close capture of a male red crossbill standing on a tree branch. This might be one of my best bird photos so far! I was in a small forest full of bird life and a lot of them came curiously close to my camera as well. This one, however, came out of absolutely nowhere and settled on a branch just beside the path I was walking. I had never seen this species before and for a moment I thought it was a brambling. They have an unusual beak that crosses over and bends. This looks like a young specimen and the beak hasn't quite grown as much as I have seen in other images of the species.
