#AnimatedApril Retrospective: The Secret of NIMH By Joan Amenn Talk about your cult film! This beautifully dark tale is based on a book by Robert C. O’Brien and could not in a million years be mistaken for a Disney production. This of course, was completely intentional by director Don Bluth and his merry band of rebels from the House of Mouse. Not only did Bluth and company create a uniquely styled work of art, they also had the option of sharing the profits equally, which was mind-blowingly radical at the time. This would all make “The Secret of NIMH” a landmark in the history of animated film even if it was otherwise nothing special.

Based on the premiere episode alone, it seems safe to say they will be gratified with a whole new and yet familiar world to embrace and obsess over. “Lazarus” is not “Cowboy Bebop” but, as Watanabe has confirmed, does exist in the same universe.

#AnimatedApril Retrospective: The 25th Anniversary of Chicken Run By Joan Amenn Aardman Studios have brought so many great characters to the screen and received so many accolades that it is sometimes overlooked how difficult it is to create stop motion animation. They certainly have made it seem charmingly easy as audiences the world over have fallen in love with the antics of Wallace and Gromit who received an Oscar nomination this year for the latest installment in their continuing adventures. Teaming up with DreamWorks twenty-five years ago, Aardman introduced audiences to a different set of characters who, like our favorite cheese obsessed inventing duo, also must rely on their ingenuity in “Chicken Run.” Borrowing from such classic films as “The Great Escape”(1963) and “Stalag 17,”(1953) this stop motion film has so many mind-bogglingly small details it is stunning how dedicated the studio’s team was in bringing it to the screen.
