Night scene in northern Canada from our backyard. Three people and a small dog are grouped together in the bottom right, looking up at the sky. The Aurora Borealis is dancing in swathes of lime green, with brilliant stars including the constellations Cassiopeia and the Big Dipper and scattered meteors shooting through it all. It was November 2001 and our first Leonids Meteor shower - we got up at 1:30 a.m., dressed for -30C. and spent about an hour watching the sky in amazement. Also visible are a few scattered gas well flares burning off on the horizon. I am standing and pointing up at the sky, wearing a bright yellow heavy parka; my mom is sitting on a yellow milk crate and has a cigarette in one hand and our toy poodle cradled in her left arm (under her blue coat); my brother is standing to the far right, in a black jacket with teal arms, grey pants and high winter boots.
