an old, very thick book, open at a page showing a hand drawn illustration of a potato plant and it's fruit and roots
The Herball, or, Generall historie of plantes
John Gerard’s 1597 herbal includes the first published description of the potato plant to appear in English. The illustration was probably the 1st picture of a potato that most British people had ever seen. This is a later edition. #ArchiveFoodAndDrink
Just caught up about #Archive30 so for #ArchiveFoodAndDrink we're sharing this hospital menu from 1893, and the daily ration of beer for patients... salisburyhealthcarehistory.uk/old-manor-ho...
Today's #archive30 is #ArchiveFoodandDrink A little tricky for us as other than the emergency biscuits we don't have any food in the collection. So we're sharing the only cookbook in the library.
Kolaches (This recipe, brought to the State by Bohemian settlers, has been revised for ordinary conditions.) Scald one pint of milk, let cool until lukewarm. Dissolve one and one-half ckaes compressed yeast in one-fourth cup lukewarm water to which has been added one teaspoon of sugar. Let raise while milk cools. Add dissolved yeast to cooled milk and make a sponge. Let raise until light. Cream together one cup sugar and one cup butter. Add three egg yolks and 2 whole eggs well beaten, two teaspoons salt. Put in the sponge and mix well. Add flour enough to handle well. Let dough raise until light and roll out to one-half inch thickness. Cutout with biscuit cutter. Make a depression in the center and fill. Let raise and bake in a quick oven. Any of the following fillings can be used: Fruit filling: mash stewed prunes, add sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle with cocoanut or chopped nuts. Apricots, peaches, apples or any canned fruit may be used. Poppy Seed filling: grind poppy seed and boil in just enough water to keep moist. Then add sugar, cinnamon, maple syrup, raisins and three or four ginger snaps. Cottage Cheese filling: Combine grated rind of lemon, one-half cup sugar, one tablespoon cream, two egg yolks and one pint of dry cottage cheese
Kolaches ingredients such as yeast, flour, and salt, in bowls on a kitchen counter
Sticky, stringy dough stuck to a person's hands
Baked round kolaches with various fillings
Our intrepid Archivist Jenny attempted to recreate a kolache recipe from Early Nebraska Cooking (openspaces.unk.edu/spec-coll/35) -a major challenge given limited instructions & measures and no cooking temp or time + no compressed yeast availability. They were edible! #ArchiveFoodAndDrink #Archive30

Black and white poster banning the sale of spiritous liquors in Met canteens but allowing the sale of cider and malt liquor at certain times on weekdays, Sundays, Christmas Day and Good Friday on Met premises only to War Reserve Constables, members of the Pensioner Reserve, full-time special constables and regular police officers at any time, and to part-time specials and Met "ancillaries" whilst on duty or attending a recognised reunion or meeting. This was also expanded to messengers, station cleaners, motor car drivers, electricians and other civil staff "at Stations (or at Lambeth)" if they had to take a refreshment break there. The sale of dry goods was limited to civil staff, regular officers, members of the Pensioner Reserve and (if they were in attached or adjacent married quarters) officers' family members. Observance of these regulations and those for alcohol were both the responsibility of the station's Station Officer or the officer in charge of the accommodation.
In February 1941 Commissioner Philip Game signed off on these regulations for selling, supplying and consuming intoxicating liquor and "commodities" in Met canteens ... #ArchiveFoodAndDrink #Archive30 #Easter #Easter2025 #WWII #VEDay80 #MetAtWar #GoodFriday

Xmas tea I think… with a large family. There are parents, grandparents, uncles and great aunts in this picture. I love the cups of tea and bread and butter! Simpler times (though quite a spread!)
My mum in laws’ wedding breakfast.
Pudding bowl hair cuts never went out of fashion in the 20c! I wonder what they are eating. They certainly are enjoying it! It’s my mum in law and her cousin
This family LOVED a day out and a picnic! I love the women wearing knotted hankies! It’s my husband’s Nan, mum, uncle and his great aunts and extended family.
