#PopularItem

Something different this year, we are going for the red cuttings book 📕. Always a popular item to share as it contains so much history (1908-1915) from the Cardiff City Mental Hospital

I wonder who put it all together 🤔🤔

Today's #Archive30 is #PopularItem. The diaries of John Bird, clerk to the first Marquess of Bute, took the lid off late C18 Cardiff. They were immensely popular and sold out but you can still see them via our web site www.southwalesrecordsociety.co.uk/04.htm

Ordnance Survey maps are often looked at in our Searchroom and are definitely a #PopularItem. This example is slightly less usual, as it's from the 1960 geological survey. Apart from being interesting, we think they're beautiful 😍

One of our more popular items are our books of attestation signatures. Those for 1958-2003 are digitised and available by email, whilst those from 2003 almost up to the present were recently donated to us. (Pre-1958 ones are at the National Archives.) #PopularItem #Archive30 #WomensHistory

A #PopularItem from our collections is this painting of the proposed City Hall from c.1910. We have a copy of it on our wall. Not only is it colourful, it always gets people talking. It wasn't built due to Mr Caird's gift of £100,000 to build the simpler Caird Hall. #Archive30

Barbara Bell's 1940s memoir was the start of our hunt for #UntoldStories of early Met WPCs - ones already in our library by Lilian Wyles and Dorothy Peto by contrast reflect the upper-working and middle class backgrounds of many early female Met officers in the 1920s & '30s. #Archive30 #LGBThistory

Register of Inebriates | Flickr Ref: GD/Mus/115 The Register of Inebriates, sometimes referred to by the press as the “Dundee Roll of Fame” or “Black List”, was created in March 1905 under the Licensing (Scotland ) Act 1903. People convicted under the act were to be listed, photographed and described in notices shared to the Police and Town Council. Copies of the Orders were given to publicans in the city, to warn them that “liquor should not be supplied to such person”. There are 7 men and 35 women of ages ranging from 16 to 63. Those entered on the list would have appeared numerous times before the Police Court for various crimes, all linked to drunken behaviour. They were often millworkers and labourers who moved around a lot. Offenders often appeared in court with others on the list. For more information please see these blog posts: dundeecityarchives.wordpress.com/2018/03/22/black-list/

There are many #UntoldStories in the archives. Take for instance the stories of the people who found themselves on the so called "Black List". You can see their photos here: www.flickr.com/photo.... We have told some of their stories here: dundeecityarchives.w... #Archive30

What do we think of this 1902 outfit? We spy quilting, crochet, chiffon, ruffles, flowers and is that a heart shaped jewel on a choker? The lady hasn't been identified but may be Violet, Viscountess Milner. If you recognise her, let us know!

Simone Mirman began her millinery career collaborating with #Schiaparelli (the subject of a new V&A exhibition) before moving on to royalty. She also designed two hats for Met WPCs, though the second proved so impractical that it was replaced in less than a year. #Archive30 #ArchiveFashion

Children’s sailor suits became fashionable after being popularised by royalty in the Victorian era.

Local girl Gladys Harrison is pictured here in her sailor suit, now in our collection, with her mother Lily, around1917.
