One of our most popular collections is D595 Inland Revenue: Derbyshire Valuation Offices. Whilst the title is not riveting, the collection contains maps and schedules giving extensive information about the owners and occupiers of land and property just prior to WW1.

This early 18th century herbal notebook is a very #PopularItem in our collection. It has cures for everything from hiccups to the plague (and the odd cake recipe too). It's also shrouded in mystery - who was the author?!

Exploring London : a Junior Shell Guide : Isobel Barnett & Ronald Searle : 1965 back cover. One of the long lived Shell Guides, produced by the petrol and oil giant for many years, and this covering London is one of the 'Junior Guides'. Published in 1965 it is an idosyncratic look at the capital city for children and was compliled by Isobel Barnett and illustrated by the incomparable Ronald Searle. The latter is probably why both visitors and inhabitants bear more than a passing relationship to St. Custard's and St. Trinians! The book is designed by Bruce Robertson (d.2014) who went on to found the design partnership "Diagram".. In a parkland a London policeman, with white gauntlets, directs traffic against a background of spiky steeples and buildings with a red bus in the distance.
