#Archive30 theme #ArchiveNightmares
It seems and feels as though the delights of spring are ever more stunning. For after having such [animal damage to paper] it makes a person [paper damage] and so "frisky". Why Carri! - (as I don't like formality you will please excuse me for using your name in this manner.) It was so cold here this winter that the people had to fly around after wood and coal like a bob sled on a hill side, and there whisky was so congealed as to be eatable instead of drinkable. The bottoms were knocked out of the thermometer. Why, I chanced to take a stroll one night with one of your sex and what she whispered to me froze into glaciers as it passed from her lips. I tell you it was terrible. Just think of it.
This letter to Carrie Miller from James E. McAvoy is an archive nightmare - insects have damaged it, obscuring portions of the text, including the date and part of the location. Learn more about the Carrie Miller Collection: archives.nebraska.edu/repositories... #Archive30 #ArchiveNightmares
A box of slides with one showing a close up image of an eye.
Yesterday's #Archive30 theme was #ArchiveNightmares. When you stare into the archives, the archives stare back at you! We may have a few nightmares after pulling out this slide at random! These show pantomimes at Theatre Royal, Windsor.
Black and white photograph of a woman kneeling on the floor next to some shelving, reading a small pamphlet and surrounded by large bundles of archive deeds, books and a metal box.
Of course, it is satisfying to overcome a challenge, especially with the privilege of handling historic archives, but some #ArchiveNightmares - such as new acquisitions of unsorted papers seen here in the 1960s - never change.

Our Preservation Assistant has been hard at work removing some #ArchiveNightmares from Paul Flynn’s, former Labour MP, collection. Rusted staples, paperclips & polypockets are being removed as the collection is repackaged as part of a grant from the National Manuscript Conservation Trust. #Archive30
Today's #Archive30 is #ArchiveNightmares. Cas gan Gythraul is an edition of a Welsh text warning about the dangers of witchcraft, charmers and soothsayers www.southwalesrecordsociety.co.uk/28.htm
For #Archive30 #ArchiveNightmares we have a nightmare scenario in which an MP accidentally caused his wife’s death through the incautious storage of gunpowder. Find out more here about events at Lissanoure Castle in 1847: victoriancommons.wordpress.com/2013/11/05/a...

Mould outbreaks are every archives’ nightmare. This one came out of nowhere in a monitored store & developed very quickly - a big job to get it all professionally cleaned & then moved to a new store. #Archive30 #ArchiveNightmares #BritishMuseum #Archive
Did somebody say DISASTER? Because today is #ArchiveNightmares for #Archive30... Thanks to our just-in-case kit — gloves, bucket, mop, sponges, absorbent strips, Tyvek, and a deeeep breath — archivists can still sleep soundly 💤 (Well... moist of the time)

Papers repaired from the Papers of Leo Amery.
🖌️ We've repaired the document using traditional methods - Japanese papers as a lining and infill, adhered with wheat starch paste.
⭐ #ArchiveNightmares turned into the stuff of #ArchiveDreams.
Mouldy papers from the Papers of Leo Amery.
🧟 Mouldy papers are one our #ArchiveNightmares here at the Archives Centre.
📄 This pile of papers from the Leo Amery collection have been badly damaged by mould prior to accessioning. Although the mould has been treated & deactivated the paper remains very fragile.

This is my side of the family. They could be Shrimptons.
A complete mystery in more ways than one!
This is in an album that features my husbands family. But I don’t recognise any of them. Possibly his g g g grandparents.
Formidable ladies not out of place in an Agatha Christie novel!
