What did they do before email? Write notes of course! In the right note, Winston Churchill (red ink) asks "How many U-boats are supposed to be out working now?" and Private Secretary Jock Colville (black ink) replies "6...at sea and 2 in the French port of L'Orient"

Two of the oldest #ArchivesHandwriting documents in our collection were signed by James Ley, first Earl of Marlborough, in 1625 and 1627. The title became extinct after four Earls, until John Churchill, Winston Churchill's ancestor, was made Earl (and later Duke) in 1689.

Fort Snelling, Aug to Sept 2nd 1864. Dear Wife and Children I am well and hope you are all the same. It is a month to day since I left home. It seems a long time although I have nothing to complain of and if I was a young single man, I think I could enjoy myself. I have heard nothing from home since I left and I am anxious to hear from you, and whether you have found the sheep or not. I don't think they used me exactly right in not allowing me to volunteer, but I shall not fret about it. I published another piece in the paper which will appear in the Weekly Pioneer and Democrat of the 3rd Sept.

Inspired by @kenoshamuseums.bsky.social, here's part of a Civil War letter written by Charles Marples. Handwriting is pretty similar to their Civil War letter.

We have a substantial collection of materials from Marples, who moved from MN to NE

Handwritten letter to Miss Callie Harding, Kearney, Neb. My dear cousin, I presume by this time you have given up all hopes of ever again hearing from me, but I pray you to excuse my negligence this time and promise you I will do better in the future.

Behind on your emails (I know I am)? You're in good company. Mae Strickland opens her 1891 letter to her cousin Callie Harding with: "I presume by this time you have given up all hopes of ever again hearing from me."

This letter, featuring cross-hatch writing, was sent to Mrs. Valentine O.B. Brown of West Randolph, VT, in 1838. It discusses the news and heath of family and friends, deaths, wishes for comfort and happiness, and activities such as walking in the garden and listening to birds. #ArchivesHandwriting

This month's #ArchivesHashtagParty theme is #ArchivesHandwriting, and it's also #WomensHistoryMonth, so we wanted to highlight the OWLs! The VT Chapter of the Order of Women Legislators, est. 1936, encouraged election or appointment of women to public office and provided support among its members.
