NOAA's 2024 #ArcticReportCard shows worrying trends in snow, ice, wildfire and more in the region. Card describes the rapid changes across the #Arctic, and the consequences for people and wildlife that touch every region of Earth. #AGU24 #ClimateChange www.theweathernetwork.com/en/news/clim...
2/ 🌧️ Record-breaking rainfall: Summer 2024 was the wettest in Arctic history. Winter precipitation has also surged since 1950, drastically altering ecosystems and communities. #ArcticReportCard
Migratory Arctic Caribou populations are down from 5.5-million (peaking from the 1990s to early 2000s) to 1.8-million(2023).

Circling back to the tundra, increasing #Arctic wildfires are spewing huge atmosphere-warming emissions. Across the polar region, fires have released on average 207 million tons of carbon per year since 2003, latest #ArcticReportCard shows. www.climate.gov/news-feature... 🧪
Somewhat good news for the Greenland Ice Sheet — this year’s ice loss was the lowest since 2013. Still, the ice sheet shrank by some 55 gigatons, the 2024 #ArcticReportCard says. The best analogy I can find for that is 550,000 fully loaded aircraft carriers.🧪

#Arctic temps continue to rise. The 2023-24 annual average was the 2nd highest since 1900. Arctic now warming 3 times faster than the global average, 2024 #ArcticReportCard says. 🧪 arctic.noaa.gov/report-card/...
Summer sea ice remains low, although rate of decline has moderated in the past few years, 2024 #ArcticReportcard shows. This September was the 6th lowest on record. arctic.noaa.gov/report-card/...
The summer of 2024 was the Arctic’s wettest on record, the latest #ArcticReportCard states. Arctic precip predicted to grow as temps rise; falling as rain instead of snow in many parts. arctic.noaa.gov/report-card/...
Warmer, wetter Arctic conditions are turning the tundra from a carbon sink to source, NOAA’s 2024 #ArcticReportCard reports today. Here’s a ground-level view in my story from Greenland: te360.yale.edu/features/greenland-lakes... 🧪
