Can we just agree two things:
1) police associations aren’t unions
2) giving police guns is not, never has been, and never should be an “operational decision”, but a strategic decision with huge political and human rights impacts

If anyone else was wondering about why you would protest about things taking place in other countries, even without the #ArmsDownNZ connection there are close to 17,000 people declaring African or Black ethnic group in the 2018 Census, nearly 8,000 of whom are in Auckland.
I fully support the kaupapa of the #BlackLivesMatter and #ArmsDownNZ solidarity marches today. These struggles for racial justice and against police violence are crucial.
If you are able to safely attend the events in Auckland, Wellington or elsewhere in Aotearoa, please do so.
I immigrated to NZ from the USA 15+ years ago -- after years of increased miltarisation of the US police force after 9/11. #ArmsDownNZ I like feeling safe. I don't fear a call here that one of my students' unconventional behaviours could be misread and turn into a tragedy
Speaking as a former lawyer - #ArmsDownNZ. Experience has taught me not to trust cops without guns, let alone cops with guns.
