The journal changed name three times... from 1970-1996 it was a stapled news-sheet titled "The Print Collector's Newsletter". From 1996-1998 it was "On Paper", then from 1998-2009 it became "Art on Paper" after which the journal ceased publication.

Art books on my shelves No.006...

I have the first 41 issues of this bi-monthly art journal, published from 1996 to 2009. Its editorial scope included limited-edition prints and artists' books, drawings, photographs and ephemera... sadly long gone!

I wasn't a fan of Emin's work until viewing two pieces at an exhibition of 'money' at, appropriately, the Monnai de Paris. There I bought the book and now understand much more about Emin... now I'm a fan!

Front illustration on dust-jacket of "Le Miserere de Georges Rouault" which, as Frédéric Cherchève, the grandson of Georges Rouault describes...

"A little more than a century ago Georges Rouault began a series of copper engravings which thirty years later were published under the title Miserere.

This monumental work, the gestation of which was as long as painful, Rouault considered it as representative of its artistic effort: "I was like a peasant in its field, attached to the globe as hanged from the hemp rope, like the beef at the coupling, although resentful as a devil, nohill the nose of my work only to fix the light, the shadow, the half-tone, theuntil I believe that I will keep it beyond the faithful tomb of remure."

Inspired by the terrible war of 1914, the work whose first title was: Miserere and War, goes beyond these events and becomes by its universality a vast fresco of the human condition.

Poverty, sorrow, suffering, death are the eternal companions of man, but the gaze of the believer gives them the strength and the light of hope."

I rarely pass a charity shop without taking a quick browse for art books at 50 cents. One day I struck lucky with "Le Miserere de Georges Rouault" 1st Ed. pub 1951 with 58 superb engravings by Rouault.
