A close-in view of the right side of the face of an elephant sculpture constructed of lantana camara.

This photo shows an amber-colored resin eye surrounded by vines following the contours of the elephant’s brow, cheek, ear, legs and trunk. In varying brown shades from dark to light, the lines contrast with the green grass and blue sky visible behind the elephant, in the corners of the photo.

Taken 2024 at Somerleyton Hall, Suffolk, UK.

*****

BACKGROUND INFO on the artists and material . . .

A pretty flowering member of the verbena family, native to the American tropics, the popular, colorful plant found in many a garden center - lantana camara - has now invaded more than 40 countries.

As an invasive weed in India, it threatens native species, having invaded around 50% of elephant habitat, and 40% of tiger habitat. In the wild, the toxic shrub generally grows to around 6’ creating dense thickets, and can vine up trees growing more than 15’ in height.

As part of an ongoing nonprofit project, The Real Elephant Collective uses the weed to create unique, life-sized Indian elephant sculptures based on individual real elephants, for exciting art installations to encourage living in coexistence with all wild animals.

Black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) a bird with a black shiny crown, white eye ring, red eyes and black iris. White cheek, throat and wings with shades of greys. Black bill with a highlight of white at the tip of the upper mandible. Leaves in the foreground with black stripes like patterns with white highlights. Blurr background with black fading patterns.

Made few grey toned papers few months back.
The process making my own grey toned paper was interesting and a good learning experience.
One can make cool greys or warm greys, depending on one's own preference.
I get to watch these birds in the middle of the city and at one of the common visited parks in Bangalore. Cubbon Park is centrally located and one of the most visited park how these birds have adapted to urbanization is amazing.

Owl made with black charcoal pencil, with black streaks on the crown, a grey large brow, two eyes with black iris, sharp pointy bill, patches of white on the shoulders and wings. Perched on a Pine tree with moss cover from the Coniferous forests of the higher altitude Himalayan moist temperate forest. Pine leaves in the background.
Rarely seen in the Himalayan region, one of the most gorgeous owl, Boreal owl (Aegolius funereus), there are only few observations of them from India.

Editors suggested I study works of Simon Calburn from the book by Alan Kemp, “The Owls of Southern Africa”. His illustration took him 11 years. Hoping to be that meticulous and good with this book, too. His studies of owls in various stages are brilliant and inspiring.

I also picked up the “Owl of the world” by Rob Hume, illustrated by Trevor Boyer, what beautiful paintings and illustrations. Hope to live up to these standards in my own works.

Have been travelling to Little Rann of Kutch for most of the winters from 2014, last couple of years missed it. I truly miss that magical terrain, the vast flat land, which seems like a never ending sea. Suddenly, out of nowhere, one would spot an Imperial Eagle, a Peregrine Falcon, a Harrier, a Desert Fox or the endangered Wild Ass. Got my first Pallid Scoops Owl from this magical land, so did I get the Short-Eared Owl.

I crawled for the first time to photograph the owl. It was worth the effort, couple of us could make few decent images that day. They roost under Prosopis juliflora, camouflaged as bark. In memory of that magical sighting, I present to you my first oil study of this graceful owl.

During a recent sketching session, I observed a pair of Indian Grey Hornbills successfully raising their young this year. Hornbills are monogamous, meaning they have a single partner and mate for life. It was interesting to watch the male hornbill hunt Oriental Garden lizard and offer it to his better half. The pair constantly moved from one tree to another, encouraging the juvenile to fly and lookout for food.

Confused, the juvenile wondered why his parents were hunting solo and leaving him out. As part of their growth lessons, the pair sometimes feeds the young one and motivates him to explore the woods independently. My work aims to depict the confusion and unexpectedness of the juvenile. Though perched on the fig tree, he lacks the experience to distinguish ripe from unripe figs. Eventually, he will learn through many trials and errors and his choice making will get better.

Many cultures view hornbills as symbols of eternal love and fidelity. This part of the parenting behavior from the hornbills was a great learning experience for me. Love comes in various forms, sizes, colors, and emotions. There is so much to learn from nature and our fellow beings.

Japanese bamboo brush with black handle and golden sticker of the brand and few inscriptions in Japanese. Black and white artwork made with Ink. Indian Grey Hornbill Juvenile (Ocyceros birostris) sharp long billed bird with long strands of feathers on crown. Perched on Fig tree with leaves and Fig fruits and a long tail. We celebrate #lovehornbillsday on February 13th, 2025, here is a Indian Grey Hornbill juvenile from my recent visit to Kokkare Belluru Bird Sanctuary,Mandya, Karnataka, India. Indian Grey Hornbill Juvenile (Ocyceros birostris) Title: Penance_51! Medium: Ink on paper Size: 11.7×16.5 inches (29.7 x 41.9 cms) size; 220 GSM Scholar paper Duration: 5.5 hours February 13th, 2025 Reference: Own Image Location: Kokkare Belluru Bird Sanctuary, Maddur taluk, Mandya district, Karnataka, India During a recent sketching session, I observed a pair of Indian Grey Hornbills successfully raising their young this year.

Short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) Study in Charcoal pencil, a bird perched on branches of Prosopis juliflora tree. Small tuffs on the head a reason they are called short eared. Two eyes, bill, streaks patterns on the body, two legs with talons and two front digits. Background leaves of Prosopis juliflora.
Another charcoal study work for the Owls of India book project! Short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat India. Did study part of my Charcoal online class, were we studied various aspects of charcoal medium.

Been visiting Little Rann of Kutch for many years during the winter until Covid struck havoc. This habitat is magical, salt pans are great places to watch larks, harriers and mammals too. The shrubs’ forests are where I got to watch owls, especially the Short-eared owl, always perched on land below the Prosopis juliflora trees. Prosopis juliflora are invasive trees non-native to India was part of failed attempts to make the dry habitat to a green forest cover.

Year on year count of native birds are on the decline because of this non-native tree. The winter visiting owls, though, seem to enjoy the cover from these trees and roost under this tree for most of the day. The patterns of the tree branches and owls are so well camouflaged, it took me many attempts during my first visit to spot them. Later, the yellow eyes of the owls were their giveaway, and I got to sight many individuals with this hint.

Hoping to visit this magical land again in coming years and watch more species that have eluded me before.

I am super excited to hold a book from @dragonsofwales.bsky.social (Andy Frazer) because he creates artworks with fine details and there is something magical about the beings and environment he depicts.
