Bird with a white face, red on the back of the head, black-and-white patterned wings and a downy white breast grips a tree and aims its straight beak at it. They're called "red-breasted" because there is a splash of pink clear down on the part of the breast by its feet, even though the color on the back of the head is usually brighter and easier to see.

Downy or Hairy #Woodpecker? I'm not sure, but I think... Downy? (Cornell lab says figuring out which is which is "one of the first identification challenges that beginning bird watchers master.") In winter they're found in mixed species flocks. For today's #BirdOfTheDay theme of #Woodland birds.

A Downy Woodpecker studies the movements of a Northern Cardinal through the canopy at the woods edge. They make an interesting contrast of colours: he in his white, red, and black; she in her taupes, oranges, blacks, and whites.
