Male Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) feeding a chick at its nest hole in a smooth-barked beech tree. The adult clings vertically to the trunk, its pale bill meeting the open bill of the young bird visible inside the dark oval cavity. The adult’s plumage is entirely black with a vivid red crown from forehead to nape. Strong grey feet and stiff tail feathers brace against the bark.
