A common theme at the @bou.org.uk Woodland Birds symposium #BOUatEOU is we all work with birds in decline, which can be depressing! But @lesserspotnet.bsky.social boosted morale with great news that lesser spotted woodpeckers are doubling their brood sizes 🎉 A gold standard citizen science project 👊

Today's @bou.org.uk woodland birds symposium was the perfect warm up for the @eounion.bsky.social conference here at @bangoruniversity.bsky.social. I especially enjoyed Gilberto Pasinelli's keynote looking at how seed masts, rodents + predators influence wood warbler fecundity & survival. #BOUatEOU

My first international conference research talk in 10 years - scary! It's hard starting up a study system from scratch with no research group but with strong collaborations, hard work & great study species - there is progress. It was great to share today with @bou.org.uk folk #BOUatEOU #ornithology

Take-home:
🌲 As pine martens expand, spatial refuges for owls shrink.
🦉 Food availability remains the strongest driver of breeding success.
⚖️ Still early in the colonisation so as pine martens increase, we may see evidence of the alternative prey hypothesis to come but not just yet.

I've made it to #EOU2025 in Bangor, and I'm starting with the #BOUatEOU symposium on #WoodlandBirds. Lovely talk by Ken Smith, who's been studying the nesting habits of #LesserSpottedWoodpeckers in the UK over decades. #CitizenScience @lesserspotnet.bsky.social @bou.org.uk @eounion.bsky.social

We found that diversionary feeding is a suitable impact based tool to reduce conflicts between recovering predators (pine marten) and endangered ground nesting birds (cappercaillie) in Scottish Forests.

Presenting at #BOUatEOU 🦉 My talk explores tawny owl breeding success in Kielder Forest. With 40 years of data + field experiments, we find that food availability wins but pine marten colonisation is an emerging predictor of failure in owls.
