A hermit thrush perched on a branch facing the camera, feathers fluffed out for insulation, wings out slightly as it repositions
A hermit thrush perched on the end of a broken branch, facing the left, fluffed up to protect against the cold. It is facing to the left, with an errant branch just in front of it.
Always love seeing a hermit thrush, and it was chilly on this particular day, so it was in peak borb form #birds #hermitthrush

A brown bird with a light, speckled breast is perched on a branch outside our front door. This is a Hermit Thrush, a lovely bird that generally puts in an appearance in the Adirondack region by late April. This bird is a short-distance migrant. It winters in the southern US, rarely crossing the Gulf of Mexico. In eastern and central North America, males begin migrating north in March, arriving in our part of the Adirondack Mountains in late April. The Hermit Thrush breeds in a wide range of forest types, including conifer, northern hardwood, and mixed forest. The Hermit Thrush is seen infrequently, but it is commonly heard singing its haunting, evocative song. This thrush is part of a pair that were breeding on our property. The other thrush that breeds on our property is the Swainson’s Thrush.
The #BirdOfTheDay theme today is #speckled. Here’s a nice, plump Hermit Thrush, posing for me right outside our front door. wildadirondacks.org/adirondack-b...

A hermit thrush is perched on a slender tree branch amidst a dense network of branches and leaves in a forested area. Sunlight filters through the foliage, illuminating the scene with soft, natural light. When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d By Walt Whitman "Passing the visions, passing the night, Passing, unloosing the hold of my comrades’ hands, Passing the song of the hermit bird and the tallying song of my soul, Victorious song, death’s outlet song, yet varying ever-altering song, As low and wailing, yet clear the notes, rising and falling, flooding the night, Sadly sinking and fainting, as warning and warning, and yet again bursting with joy, Covering the earth and filling the spread of the heaven, As that powerful psalm in the night I heard from recesses, Passing, I leave thee lilac with heart-shaped leaves, I leave thee there in the door-yard, blooming, returning with spring. I cease from my song for thee, From my gaze on thee in the west, fronting the west, communing with thee, O comrade lustrous with silver face in the night."
"Passing the visions, passing the night,
Passing, unloosing the hold of my comrades’ hands,
Passing the song of the hermit bird and the tallying song of my soul,"

OUR #HERMITTHRUSH that Winters around our home each year joined me as I rested a minute behind our home. I’d just finished some yard work, & had been watching it while I worked. Here’s also another pic & info from my Audubon app.

Unique among songbirds they employ the Overtone Series in their songwriting, a system "used to build many human musical scales."

I spotted this lovely #HermitThrush a little over 5 years ago, in my favorite park. I haven't seen one since. With birding, sometimes timing is everything!

Hermit Thrushes are symbols of stillness and contemplation in harsh times, as well as hope that things will improve soon.

The Darkling Thrush by Thomas Hardy I leant upon a coppice gate When Frost was spectre-gray, And Winter's dregs made desolate The weakening eye of day. The tangled bine-stems scored the sky Like strings of broken lyres, And all mankind that haunted nigh Had sought their household fires. The land's sharp features seemed to be The Century's corpse outleant, His crypt the cloudy canopy, The wind his death-lament. The ancient pulse of germ and birth Was shrunken hard and dry, And every spirit upon earth Seemed fervourless as I. At once a voice arose among The bleak twigs overhead In a full-hearted evensong Of joy illimited; An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small, In blast-beruffled plume, Had chosen thus to fling his soul Upon the growing gloom. So little cause for carolings Of such ecstatic sound Was written on terrestrial things Afar or nigh around, That I could think there trembled through His happy good-night air Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew And I was unaware.

10/16/2025 Thursday evening: this adorable Hermit Thrush decided to pose for me while I was exiting Trinity Churchyard at closing time. It was quite dark by then but I had to stop for a few quick snaps of this willing model. #hermitthrush #thrush #birds #fallmigration #wildlife
The Hermit Thrush is a small, warm-brown forest bird with a russet tail and finely spotted breast. Shy and solitary, it sings from deep cover at dawn or dusk. Its summer song is among the most beautiful in nature—clear, fluted notes spiraling upward in pure harmonic intervals. Each phrase hangs like glass, balanced between sorrow and serenity. Its syrinx, the bird’s vocal organ, is unusually complex: each bronchial branch can work independently, allowing two notes at once, often forming perfect harmonies. The “glassy” tone arises from stacked partials that follow a harmonic series, the same pattern used in Western music. Research at the University of Vermont showed that Hermit Thrush songs align with “just intonation”, pure resonant intervals based on whole-number ratios. It’s as if the Thrush discovered harmonic beauty long before humans. Perhaps we were even inspired. Across cultures, the thrush has been seen as sacred, a voice of balance and renewal. In Haudenosaunee legend, it hid in the Eagle’s feathers, and sang its perfect song at the edge of heaven before returning shyly to the forest, singing from the heart, not for praise. Later, Walt Whitman called it the “solitary singer,” writing: In the swamp, in secluded recesses, A shy and hidden bird is warbling a song, Solitary, the thrush, Singing of death, and of the soul’s clear conscience, And of life—immeasurable joy.
Hermit Thrushes are back in Frederick County. Several were scattered through a still pocket of forest this weekend, their soft “barks” echoing through the trees as they sorted out their autumn territories.

A hermit thrush on the ground. The bird is standing in dirt next to a green plant. There are several pockets of green plants/growth scattered around the picture with brown dirt between them. There is the end of a board at the top center. The thrush is just barely right of center in the photo, looking to the right. Its feathers and head are brown and the long tail looks orange. Its chest is white with brown streaking. It has a black eye with a white eye ring and a short stout beak.
