Lovely Lighting

I found this great early picture of a young Bettie Page posing before her pin-up days of fame. Like all previous reference pictures this one shows great lighting. This time she is even lit from two sides. It creates lovely core shadows on the body with lighter planes to the left and side of each body part. As you may know by now from childhood I am all about tonal values. The reason why I did so many graphite drawings lies in my love of the medium. Besides that, I consider color as an option on top of composition and values. These kind of drawings merely are a study after the latter. I reckon I will execute the best of them in later pastels, colored pencil drawings and oils to come.

Some Distortion

I endeavored to combine my personal roundism style with some surrealism this time. Actually I made some references to symbolism, surralism and mathematics altogether. This intially strange combination creates some sort of distorted, alieniating yet attractive view on the body. However, a correct use of values prevents the spectator from not recognizing the overall look. As a result she remains the pleasant appearance of Bettie to gaze upon. Personally I think such adds to flavor of everything she stood for: sexual liberation and an appetite for the naughty.

Everything Oscillates

In my graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 27-04-18’ I mentioned the golden ratio. Surely that has been prominently demonstrated of late. The drawing at hand is no exception. Thre are two vortices in her knee and breast. In the negative space around her body I made some curves echoing her curves like a continuous wave. These curves or rather oscillating lines are proof that everything in the universe vibrates.

Pittoresque

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Batenburg – 02-08-20’ depicts a place not far away from were I was born. As you know I often wander about and astray through landscapes I have never been before. In this particular case I know all too well. This village is not far away from Nijmegen, where I was born and raised. Even though I drew my home town Nijmegen before I hardly depicted any village in the neighborhood. Time to change that and leave the bicycles out of the equasion. Upon my word Batenburg is a quite pittoresque village along the river Maas, on the outer edge of Gelderland. The only criticisms I can utter is that there are way to much electric bicycles flocking the parameneters nowadays. Since the introduction of them there are a lot day tripper tourists on bike. However, they didn’t ruin the very scenery that caught my eye.

Castle in Ruins

There lay the ruins of Batenburg Castle. It so happened I saw them on a lovely sunny day when I went to my parents. The tree line at the left serves as an introductory repoussoir delineating the castle ruins on its right. There were some strong tonally dark blocks underneath them. What I liked about the scene was the lighter bricks creating a stripy rhythym. They gave me some clear visible structures to get hold of. After all, because of the heavy back lighting the scenery was already was very dark. Nevertheless, I love these kind of types of light above depicting a landscape in full display of it. The moat surely is a bonus because it doubles all forms reflected in them, in reverse. That’s the secret to drawing or painting water.

Glamorous, Yet Gloomy

This colored pencil drawing ‘Sans Titre - 17-10-16’ shows a glamorous yet rather gloomy portrait. It’s Mary Nolan’s, American actress and celebrity. Looking for a new addition for my ever growing Sans Titre series I found this particular photo. First and foremost, it was the light or rather the gloom than the glam, that attracted me. Curiously intrigued by her I was scrolling through her Wikipedia page. I didn’t know her and there’s good reason for that. More a ‘minor celebrity’ whose life was typed by struggles and strides. Coming from a broken family, picked up by abusive men, then a Ziegfeld girl, she eventually starred in some movies. She was kicked out of some due to her troubled actions and turned to drug abuse. A true rock ‘n roll life and therefor abrupted by an overdose at age 45.

Essential Blocks of Light and Dark

Starting these portraits obviously I picked the ones I knew best. Only to realize there are so many worthwhile too. Somehow I came to realize the glam of it all is not the only thing Hollywood represents, also the misfits. Perhaps most didn’t make it to the top but I can do my best to give them a second chance. At least, on paper that is. Back to the gloom and glamour of the portrait. Following up my portrait of Natalie Wood in roundish strokes I decided to execute this one in straight lines only. Focusing on the light I tried to capture it in essential blocks of light and dark. The first time I used Derwent Coloursoft pencils and I decided to use the color purple only. It serves as a symbol of the dark side of those who have briefly tasted fame.

Regularly Visit a Place You Have Never Been Before

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Schiedam – 21-08-16’ is part of the series under the same name. Probably the most cubist one. In 2016 I was visiting the centre of Schiedam for the first time. You know how these things go. You live in a city nearby and for no particular reason you never visit neighboring cities or villages. The reason is very simple. Caught up in daily affairs once in a while you are aware of places to visit. However, these can stay with intentions but you forget about them. In my artistic life there will always be things to do. Hence, the to-do lists grow forever. Then, all of a sudden, I remember a quote by the Dalai Lama: regularly visit a place you have never been before.

The Jenever Museum

There you have it: the old master’s advice. Since I read one of his books an odd 30 years ago I stick to this principle. For no particular reason I went to Schiedam on a Sunday, just to check it out and it’s only 20 minutes drive. Well, a fun place to be, I can tell you that. The old city is not too big but there is a lot of beauty to see: canals, old houses and the Schiedam Museum of Modern Arts. One other museum I have to mention as well: The Jenever Museum. All about the craft of distilling jenever or ‘gin’ in English. Having already taken a lot of photographs in the city centre, I was taking it all in at the museum. Great to discover the passion for something I haven’t thought about before.

Clear Right from the Start

Then, after having consumed enough data on jenever I looked down the window from the second floor towards the other side of the canal. There it was, a perfect view on one of the windmills towering over the city. Immediately I was struck by the circular movement of the tree branches contrasting the straight lines of the buildings. Back home I employed curves and straight lines and wove them into planes dissolving into one another.

Returning One Day

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Schoonhoven - 22-02-16’ is not typical of the city itself. Some time ago I came to visit the town. The last time must be in 1991. Back then I always felt like returning one day. However, it’s not on my normal route to my parents in Nijmegen. You know how it goes. Life goes on and you forget these things. Then, one day I happened to read a paperback by the Dalai Lama. It was called ‘10 Secrets to a Happy Life’ if I remember it correctly. One advice was to frequently visit a place you haven’t been before. So there I was, walking through a city with no particular place to go. Taking it all in.

Willow-Like

For no particular reason I found no interesting artistic motifs in the center of the city. Actually it’s rather small and consists of some pittoresque little canals running across it. Maybe I found them a bit too corny for my taste and I was looking for that other thing. In the end I already was walking back to the car and then I saw something interesting in a backstreet. There was this interesting willow-like tree in front of a house. I found myself attracted to a combination of straight building lines and round branches. It remind me to the appearance of tree structures set off against straight structures in Rijswijk – 04-12-15.

Contrast between Round and Straight Structures

Conclusion is that the contrast between round and straight structures catch my eyes all the time. That an allegory on everything manmade and natural. Straight lines are almost unnatural but in combination with all things curved the both of them look in harmony.

A Neat Little City

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Rijswijk- 04-12-15’ explores the interplay of straight forms and curvature as its central theme. Since I find myself in the mood to draw landscapes and cityscapes I regularly set out to discover new sceneries. Often beauty lies around the corner and so is Rijswijk. It’s a neat little city glued onto the greater realm of the Haaglanden area as an integral and indispensable link. Maybe I overlooked Rijswijk in the recent past. Hence, the very reason to visit it. The centre is compact and inspired, dominated by the church smack in the middle.

A New Doctrine

‘Culemborg – 21-11-15‘ as drawing was fairly good but I definitely missed something: a natural and not man-made element. That was the very reason I crafted the subsequent drawing ‘The Court’s Pound (De Hofvijver)’ - 26-11-15’ including water. Water by nature moves in mysterious ways and forms a perfect contrast with the buildings in the back. There you have it: forging a new doctrine with regard to future cityscapes to draw and paint. Everythin straight and rectangular has to be counterbalanced by something curved and organic-looking.

The Lily and Solomon

Such is life: when you plant an idea in your mind, it begins to attract what is kindred. Consequently, the first thing that struck me, standing in front the church, was aforementioned interplay. That would be straight contour delineations of the church and inspiring curves the tree branches took as forms. Do they state something about christianity and for that matter, any religion? Now I understand what Jesus said about the lily and Salomo better. The massive look of an impressive church can never surpass the elegant and simple beauty of nature. I like to add something to Jesus’ teachings: it’s all about the contrast. We can only enjoy nature fully, comparing it to all things man-made. They are in need of eachother and thus both play their part.

John Everett Millais

This graphite pencil drawing ‘Ophelia – 08-12-25’ is my Shakespearean card up my sleeve I wanted to play for so long. Considering myself to be outside the art community and its non-crafters I always felt attracted to realism and other styles. Take the Pre-Raphaelites for example and John Everett Millais for that matter because I want to talk about him specifically. His interpretation of Ophelia I always found one of the best examples what realism may actually look like. By that I don’t mean sheer copying a photo or scenery but the kind that becomes spirited. I read his story and how long it took to craft his painting. Apparently he studied a specific brook with vegetation on its banks thoroughly in a make-shift cabin. In spite of weather conditions getting worse he kept on going.

Passion

That is passion indeed and it still rubs off looking at it, even after 150-odd years. This could be the kind of passion the world is in need of today. Especially on a level of counterbalancing non-creativity and the lack of skills in today’s art. Well, my passion was to match his painting. However, also adding the aspect of chiaroscuro to enhance the dramatic aspect of the theme. Perhaps that’s because I am a tonal kind of man which cannot be said of Millais. What I liked though was the dark water surrounding the fair skin complexion of the lady at hand.

Taylor Swift, Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue, to Mention a Few

In fact, I have been scrolling through a lot of similar paintings on the theme. Many I found not surpassing Millais level though. Even Friedrich Heyser’s didn’t match my expecations, although Taylor Swift made it popular in recent times. The painting is lush and technically not too bad. How could he have missed the the angle of refraction of light near her face! So many reasons started urging upon me to come up with an interpretation myself. Suddently I remembered ‘Where the Wild Roses Grow’ by Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue.

More Light

An impressionistic pastel of the sun setting through the trees at the Hatertse Vennen (Hatert Meres), Gelderland, Nederland. After the last one I wanted to show more sunlight because I felt that was missing. Landscapes can look very bland, almost greyish if there is a neutral lighting caused by a full or partial cloud cover.

Monet’s Statement

I fully concur with what Monet used to say: “I do not paint objects but the light around them”. Since then I prefer treescapes like these ‘contrejour’ (against daylight). The risk one faces is that the subject becomes blackened but in this particular case the sun already was setting so the landscape was not overlit.

Colors

For a brief moment I had the opportunity to study the color scheme of the tree trunks in the shadow, colors of the leafs and the golden light beams shining and shimmering through. Of course there was not enough time to capture it at the very spot but I remembered it and elaborated it on pastel paper in the confort of my studio.

Instructional

This pastel became instructional for my students to whom I can show how treetops shift in color because they do not have a lot of mass and are very thin. The light almost tends to bow around them and light in treetops becomes shattered, shining more intense than at the bottom of the tree. Therefor the trunk below is dark, shows blues, purples and greens and up in the tree you can see pinks, oranges, yellows and lilacs. Same wood, different colors.
