How I categorised people | The 100 Days of Colour During ‘The 100 Days of Colour’ I monitored the way #Spotify recommended music to me to see how it changed depending on my input. I began because I had realised that over 95% of the music I was listening to and being recommended was made by white artists. I started this experiment looking through the 2020 black-white lens of race, then expanded to the definitions of race and ethnicity laid out by the United States Office of Management and Budget (OMB) (https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/omb/fedreg_1997standards), before finally landing on skin tone. For the sake of the experiment, I was trying to find a way to group the artists in my playlists so I could track representation that didn’t give me panic attacks and anxiety because of the ethical consequences of what I was doing. There were challenges with all three methods used to categorize artists on #Spotify during ‘The 100 Days of Colour’. I concluded that splitting us up based on superficial traits is an insufficient way of organising people.
