“But 2,000 years underwater didn’t do the #Antikythera mechanism many favors. Seawater rich with salts and other chemical compounds reacted with the high amount of copper in the bronze mechanism, slowly corroding it and replacing it with a green-hued rock known as #atacamite.” […]

Artistic representation of the magnetic sawtooth structure of atacamite: The magnetic moments (green) of the Cu ions (white and blue) cannot be completely aligned antiparallel to each other due to the triangular arrangement. At low temperatures, this results in the compromise arrangement shown. An external magnetic field destroys it and leads to an unexpectedly strong magnetocaloric effect, which could be used for efficient cooling.

Magnetic cooling – using a frustrated desert mineral: Research team from @tu-braunschweig.de and #HZDR identifies #atacamite as a #magnetocaloric material. The results could help to develop new materials for energy-efficient magnetic #cooling.

"To grow these copper-toothed stomach jaws, which last through the worms’ entire five-year lifespan, bloodworms harvest the metal from marine sediments on the seafloor. Then, through a previously unknown chemical reaction, the worms fuse the copper to their jaws."

Between #Stibnite and #Atacamite I first thought was, hmmm, which one is weirder looking? As you can see, that got me nowhere! Going with Stibnite because how can I not go with that deep, dark Egyptian eyeliner, though really, can’t go wrong here in this round of #MinCup24.

#atacamite is tempting for the same reason #dioptase won my vote, but I'm ultimately voting #stibnite.

TikTok has been showing me videos from the Denver Gem and Mineral Show and I saw some really cool stibnite pieces!

Round 1 Match 7 — Mineral Cup Stibnite vs Atacamite

If you're still reeling from the defeat of #Copper, now is your chance to keep copper in the running in #MinCup24. Vote for #Atacamite, a copper chloride hydroxide which in some locations can be a minor ore for copper.

#Atacamite crystallizes around seafloor vents, in arid environments, and even sublimates around subaerial volcanic vents. It is also a biomineral 🤩, a natural composite that forms bloodworm jaws.

#Atacamite -used as a green pigment since antiquity on ancient Egyptian paintings, illuminated manuscripts, sculptures, oil paintings or here in ancient Buddhist Kizil Caves in China (3rd-8th century) pulls ahead of #Stibnite -used as kohl as cosmetics since ancient Egypt for my #MinCup24 art vote.

#Stibnite is well known to have been used in cosmetics by the Ancient Egyptians, but so was #Atacamite.

Stibnite has had its chance in past MinCups. It's time to give the green beauty your vote.

This is the common form of stibinite that I see, which is again, radiating from that central point in this specimin, tiny offshoots weave amongst the pillars.

This is betroydal atacamite. This copper secondary is formed in salty or arid environments. It may alter to malachite and chrysocolla, creating pseudomorphs.
It is a gorgeous green color reminding me of yesterday's matchup with dioptase, and they have the same sourcing.

This is crystalline form of atacamite which are radiating spears like the stibinite, but with incredible color and details. Pillows of light green crystals are nestled in clusters around emerald color gems.

#MinCup24 ROUND 1 MATCH 7: #Stibnite vs #Atacamite

Stibnite is a primary source of antimony and used in a ton of applications.

Atacamite is a secondary copper mineral formed through the oxidation of other copper minerals, especially in arid, saline conditions.

Recognise this? Yes, that's #Atacamite! Atacamite can form as a corrosion product of copper alloys so is found coating many bronze statues including the Statue of Liberty.
