FLOOR MOSAIC, C. 207 CE. AUGUSTEUM IN THE BARRACKS OF THE VIGILES, OSTIA ANTICA

Ostia had a huge barracks for the vigiles, a combination of police and firefighters. It occupied a whole city block next to the theatre and was built under Trajan, like so much of Ostia. Its focal point was an axially-central shrine to the imperial cult, but under Septimius Severus this was redeveloped in high style, being given an entrance hall with a mosaic, of which this photo shows part. Here we can see the black and white mosaic pavement with a rather splendid bull being made to lower its head to the ground as the bare-chested victimarius or sacrificer is holding a slender axe. Behind the bull is the priest, raising his arms, a wand in one hand. This is just the central part of the mosaic: there are two other bulls, at left a dead one and at right a live one, each with his victimarius, and two musicians by the mostly missing altar, all offscreen.

#MosaicMonday shows us the floor of the #pronaos or #anteroom of the #Augusteum in the barracks of the #vigiles in #OstiaAntica, dedicated to the imperial cult. The other sacred space was in the #latrines where an #aedicule contained a statue of #Fortuna. Flush with success? #AncientBluesky 🏺
