2022 photo, copyright J. Steven York, taken at Mojave Air & Space Port in California. It shows a rearward video of the huge Stratolaunch carrier aircraft (informally known as the Roc) with an earlier version of the Talon hypersonic research vehicle hanging tiny under the center wing. There are two identical fuselages each with their own rudder and horizontal stabilizer. They are connected by the 385 foot span wing, with three engines, taken from Boeing 747.
2021 photo, copyright J. Steven York, taken at Mojave Air & Space Port in California. It shows the huge Stratolaunch carrier aircraft, this time a front view. There appear to be two cockpits, one on each wing, but only the one on the left with an airstair next to it is functional, and where the plane is flown and commanded from. The plane is surrounded by various man-lifts and service vehicles with are dwarfed by the plane. In this earlier photo, the plane has not yet been equipped by the hanging structure under the center wing where the Talon test vehicle was later suspended. The aircraft was originally designed to lift and air-launch large orbital vehicles (including a smaller version of the Falcon 9 rocket), but SpaceX pulled out of the deal and Stratolaunch pivoted to hypersonic research and development instead.
I'm very excited to learn that Stratolaunch has used its monster "Roc" carrier aircraft to launch two successful hypersonic flights of its Talon A2 unmanned aircraft, at least one exceeding mach 5.
I've been lucky to see the Roc three times close up, twice on [β¦]
