Good vibes all round at the Cladhan Hotel on Saturday as activists engaged in joyful resistance, singing, dancing and sharing stories. Falkirk is a place that welcomes everyone, whether you were born here or not! #FVTUiC #falkirkforall #ayewelcomerefugees

Eh, tam, as they say over here. Haven't you noticed?
Scotland is one of the good guys, anybody who wants to can call themselves Scottish.
I suspect we'll be welcoming ever more refugees from England. 🤣

Last year, we helped people from more than 100 countries rebuild their lives across Scotland.

Angela travelled up and down the country to photograph people starting again in safety. Her pictures capture a warm, welcoming and resilient Scotland we can all be proud of.

Mr Polanski said: “You might as well stay on your feet, because I’m going to say, we’ll say it loud, we’ll say it clear: migrants and refugees are welcome here.”

Giving asylum seekers the right to work is not charity – it is common sense. Allowing us to use our skills would ease the burden on the state, strengthen communities and restore dignity to people whose lives are on hold. We are teachers, builders, carers, innovators and leaders.

This #PeaceDay our hearts go out to all those living in the shadow of fear and intimidation.

We all deserve to be safe and to feel like we belong, no matter where we’re from or how we arrived.

It is impossible unless we have been in their position to understand what it is like to be a refugee. Fleeing from your home with nothing, no possessions, and often no family. To find refuge, support and a welcome in a community – we can only guess at how wonderful that must feel #AyeWelcomeRefugees

Bit of nostalgia last night watching the Last Night of the Proms - great fun and enjoyed seeing folk who are proud of being British, celebrate with Union Jack flags (EU flags as well but interestingly no St George) without any of the repulsive hatred of foreigners by the marchers #AyeWelcomeRefugees

I’ve done an awful lot of interviews in my 35 years as an academic and @neilmackay.bsky.social has been utterly meticulous with this, precise in questions and follow up. I wish I didn’t live in a time when my scholarship and voice were needed in this way.

The truth about asylum hotels

People in asylum hotels do not live in five-star luxury. Conditions are very basic. Most people share cramped rooms with complete strangers. They have no cooking or laundry facilities and no choice about when or what they eat.

The truth about asylum hotels

People seeking asylum are not allowed to work and earn their own money. If housed in a hotel, you receive just £9.95 per week. This isn’t enough to cover public transport for vital appointments and buy basic essentials, like warm clothes

The truth about asylum hotels

The previous UK government paused decision-making on asylum claims, which has caused a huge backlog. Instead of contributing to local communities, people are stuck in hotels waiting months, sometimes years, to hear if they will get refugee protection.

The UK government pays private companies huge profits to house people seeking asylum in unsuitable hotel accommodation. Instead, they could invest that money in local communities and provide social housing for everyone who needs it.

Some politicians are using lies about asylum hotels to stir up fear and division in our communities.

The truth is, we all deserve to be safe and to feel like we belong.

Off to the weekly #Palestine vigil in Kirkwall #Orkney and fed up with the last few weeks rhetoric in many parts of the UK and it's media I'm making my views clear today on another issue as well with my sartorial choice.

We took New Scots to 6 Fringe shows this year – from circus to theatre and even a sensory show for mums & toddlers. Thanks to @edfringe.bsky.social & ECCAN for making it possible. Shared culture does equal a much stronger community. 🎭🧡
