But then the Salford singer, still performing at 80, has chosen her muses carefully. This impeccable songbook shows her lighting up Whistle Test with Vinegar Joe and delivering Pearl's a Singer and Lilac Wine. She comes across as salt-of-the-earth with her memories, one being of her husband telling a songwriter: "You've got to give that to Elk - she'll nail it!" Hers is a husky voice, wrapped around tales of heartache. As one hit had it, "She sings songs for the lost and the lonely." But, as she explains, it's all about doing her homework. It shows.
