This sentiment echoed today in London at #BHIVA25 - need a powerful joined up response to counter the attack on scientific freedom. Institutions cannot remain apolitical…
‘Fear, othering, anti-science, loss of academic freedom does not have borders’ - we need a cohesive response to the sustained attack on our community. Brilliant but sobering talk from @maryamshj.bsky.social at #BHIVA25
Quote from the report "People living with HIV have to do a yearly cervical smear and my GP refused to do it for me. I had to go back and forth between my GP and HIV clinic."
A quote from the report "I was asked by my GP how does someone like you get HIV. At the time I had no words I was just in shock at the question."
Front cover "Unheard Voices" survey by National AIDS Trust
Two quotes from the report: "[My] GP was rude to me when she found out that I was pregnant, she said 'who told you to get pregnant when you have HIV?'" "One of the doctors at my practice would put gloves on and open the windows before she would examine me. "
I'm appalled. I can't believe there are people working in general practices in London who thought that was OK. I can't imagine what it must be like if you live in areas of low #HIV prevalence.
What can RCGP do about this? @rcgp.bsky.social

Lastly, if you have any ideas on how we could improve the care & experiences of PLWH over 50 years, please let me know through this survey.
Hoping to create a bank of research questions for those interested in applying for research grants. #BHIVA25 6/6

Despite being a #BHIVA conference virgin, it was an absolute delight to reconnect with people in GUM/HIV I haven't seen in years. I've also made many new connections, not all of them on the dancefloor though. 💃🕺😬
I might be back ...

I am grateful for the opportunity to meet and speak with many people from the community and hear their experiences and thoughts about their health and care needs as they navigate the uncertainties of ageing.

Although there is a clear role for GPs in HIV testing and care of an older cohort of PLWH, I was disheartened, though not surprised, that there is still a lot of work to do to improve the experiences of PLWH and make them feel confident and safe to engage with general practice.

I have research interest in care of older people living with #HIV, how health services need to respond, particularly to those who are undeserved and experience intersectional stigma.
I was particularly impressed with how GP HIV champions engaged primary care to do more HIV testing.👏

Thank you to @bhiva.bsky.social for organising a very successful conference in Brighton and one reason why I decided to come along.
I got alot more out of this meeting than I had anticipated.

Trans and gender diverse population living with #HIV has greater unmet needs Positive Voices survey shows.
And yet they suffer from lack of services and targeted support.
