Infographic: Putting People First: Safer Communities & Affordable Health Care. We required universal background checks for gun sales, safe storage laws, and red flag laws to help keep our communities safe. We protected health care by enshrining key parts of the Affordable Care Act into Michigan law, so people can get the care they need. We invested $75 million in the Public Safety Trust Fund, to better keep neighborhoods safe.
Infographic: Promises Made, Promises Kept: Investing in Kids & Education. We used over $12 million to help schools in communities of color pay off debt and level the playing field for their kids. We made sure all public school students aren’t learning on an empty stomach, and put more money into mental health and school safety programs. We improved the teacher retirement system to better support and retain diverse educators.
Infographic: Gave People Some Breathing Room: Affordability & Access. We improved Double Up Food Bucks and made fresh produce more available for SNAP recipients. We set aside $9.2 million to help nursing students pay off loans, diversifying health care so everyone can get care that respects their needs and backgrounds. We strengthened civil rights protections for everyone by expanding the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and banning conversion therapy.
Infographic: Other Relevant Legislation. House Dems passed policies like the CROWN Act, which prohibit race-based hair discrimination in the workplace, schools and elsewhere, and invested in healthy moms and healthy babies by fighting to ensure positive birthing outcomes for Black mothers and babies. House Dems also invested in Black businesses by allocating $2 million to the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council to amplify the voices of Black entrepreneurs and investing $1 million in the Global African Business Association.
The celebration of Black history, strength and achievements isn't just a month-long event. We are a diverse group of Michiganders who understand the importance of championing person-first policy; here is just some of the legislation we've passed for Black Michiganders. #BHM365
