British motorcycle racing champion Barry Sheene (1950-2003) popping the cork from a bottle of champagne and spraying me, a photographer with press credentials. The location was in the pit lane of the Oulton park racing circuit in Cheshire, UK, after he won a round of the 1974 Transatlantic Trophy against the visiting American team. Sheene is wearing his Suzuki racing leathers with his number 7 on the upper arm. He also has a cigarette in his mouth, and a victory laurel wreath around his neck. In the background are mechanics and their families leaning over the pit wall, all enjoying the celebrations.
I've never ridden a motorbike, but Barry Sheene was my hero racing on two-wheels. Here, at the TransAtlantic Easter meeting at Oulton Park in 1974, I caught him popping the victory champagne... as he caught me with the spray.
