We had decided to take an unmarked road to seek out some lovely springtime landscapes to enjoy & photograph. Little did we know that we'd happen upon a group of Bison, male, female & juveniles. One fellow was notably much larger & alone. Others were jousting, milling about (-even at times fully surrounding us, as we silenced ourselves *in vehicle*, staying motionless for a good, long while) & feasting on the plentiful early grasses. No-one seemed to care at all. To this day we aren't sure if they were wild (a couple of National Parks & Forests nearby) or 'farmed'/ranch stocks. There were no fences anywhere in sight, on the way in -or upon the way out either. In this photo there's a heavily forested mountain of deep, dark green pines in the fairly near background. In front of those, there's a fair number of aspen trees, bright in their new green foliage. But here on an expansive meadow of light to medium toned green grasses -perfectly centered in frame, is a settled down -huge bull, North American Bison. (The largest one I've ever laid eyes upon!) He wasn't challenged by anyone else in his herd, for any reason, and it was strikingly obvious who he was. He was 'alpha' and very-very content. He was dozing away on a beautiful, finally warm spring day -his huge horned head held upright.
