Does anyone have the biographical details of Sidney Cecil Hurst, the author of ‘Silent Cities’ - a book probably known to those interested in the subject of #WW1 #BattlefieldTourism ? I know he served in both the #FWW and #WW2 #SWW and about his career as an #IWGC architect etc. #FWWHist
NEW BLOG POST: A Marne Morning with le maréchal Maunoury vingtfrong.home.blog/2024/11/11/a... #FWW #FWWhist #History #1GM #BattlefieldTourism #Marne #Paris
A stone memorial roughly in the shape of a cross on a stone plinth with a path of paving slabs leading to it. A trough of flowers is at the base. There is an area of pebbles around the base and this is surrounded by a low barrier of posts and lateral poles. Behind is a car park
The memorial inscription tells us that Charles was born in Armentières and was 22 years of age when he was killed in action in September 1916
This inscription on one side of the memorial describes the young officer’s role in an action at the Bois Pareid in the Woëvre area (between Verdun and Les Éparges) on 5 April 1915.
This inscription on another panel of the memorial is a citation describing how the sous lieutenant was killed leading his men
5/ Here’s the memorial. If you go to the #Somme, do visit and remember this young officer. He was of the Classe 1914 and clearly ardent to do his bit for his country. More details in the Alt text of the photos as always #battlefieldtourism
#battlefieldtourism @HistoryandMoore During the 1920s, alongside their guidebooks to the battlefields, Michelin erected distinctive signposts for French military cemeteries. One such survives at Rossignol 🇧🇪
