#OTD On Feb 23, 1945 during the Battle of Iwo Jima Marines raised a small flag atop Mt Suribachi. Later they replaced it with a larger ensign from LST 779. Joe Rosenthal captured the iconic second flag raising photo which became a legendary symbol of victory.

#OTD On Feb 21, 1945, during the #BattleOfIwoJima, two Japanese kamikaze planes sank the USS Bismarck Sea (CVE-95), a Casablanca-class escort carrier, killing 318 crewmen. USS Saratoga was also damaged in the attack; Bismarck Sea was the last US carrier lost to enemy action.
