Tough start for Beauties in CAF league
Erasmus Shalihaxwe
FNB Women’s Super League champions, Beauties Football Club, suffer their second defeat at the CAF Women’s Champions League in South Africa on Sunday.
South African league winners Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies defeated the Namibian champions 7–0.
This came after their opening 3–0 defeat to Zambia’s Zesco Ndola Girls Football Club. Beauties, however, managed a 3–0 victory against Malawi’s Ntopwa Football Club over the past weekend.
The Okahandja side is making its debut at the regional tournament, which serves as a qualifier for the CAF Women’s Champions League finals.
The team is banking on a mix of youth and experienced players to advance to the next stage.
Speaking to COSAFA Media before the tournament, Beauties FC owner and co-coach Salome Iiyambo said her team was ready to face tough opponents.
“It’s more than just a draw; it’s a real test of our strength, our character, and our ambition. We respect all our opponents; they each have a rich history, but we do not fear anyone. We might be debutants and considered underdogs, but we are ready to fight. Let the battle begin,” she said.
Iiyambo said the squad blends players of different generations.
“COSAFA allows us to bring 21 players, and in our squad we have both youth and experience,” she said.
“In fact, we have one of the oldest players in the Namibian league, over 40, who brings invaluable guidance on the field. At the other end, our youngest player is just 15 years old, with two or three others in that age range. We also have a few with international experience. Overall, it’s a team full of life, ready to fight and stand together.”
Beauties FC interim head coach Leonard Nambandi, who was recently appointed to guide the team through the tournament, said the group stage was challenging but the team had prepared well.
“We are drawn in a difficult group, but we have done well in terms of preparation for tomorrow’s match. We will go out guns blazing and give Zesco Ndola Girls a tough match. We have analysed their previous matches and if we stick to the game plan, we can do well in our opening match,” he said.
The COSAFA qualifiers continue this week.
The semi-finals are scheduled for 29 August, with the Group B winner facing the Group C winner at midday. Group A’s winner will meet the best runner-up later that afternoon.
The final will be played on 31 August to determine COSAFA’s representative at the CAF Women’s Champions League finals.

Beauties FC pleads for CAF funds
Erasmus Shalihaxwe
FNB Women’s Super League champions, Beauties Football Club, are appealing for financial support to participate in the upcoming CAF Women’s Champions League.
The team was drawn in Group B alongside Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC (South Africa), Ntopwa FC (Malawi), and Zesco Ndola Girls (Zambia).
The matches will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 22 to 30 August. . The group winner and runner-up will advance to the next phase of the competition, scheduled for November 2025 in Morocco.
Despite receiving N$250 000 for winning the league in May, the club says the amount is insufficient to meet the competition’s requirements.
Club owner and head coach, Salome Iyambo, said Beauties FC currently has no sponsor and relies on individuals to fund operations.
She said running a football club without sponsorship is expensive, even at an amateur level.
“After a long season, you cannot let players go home without giving them something, so the money we received for winning the league went to that. The leftover is what we are currently using for preparations, and it can get depleted at any moment. Any help will boost our preparations and participation in the competition,” Iyambo said.
She said meeting CAF standards includes hiring a licensed coach, having qualified team medics, providing three tracksuits per player, and covering three meals per day.
If the team travels by bus to South Africa, they must also use the same bus for transport to training and matches throughout the tournament.
Iyambo added that they have written to the government requesting assistance with transport and are awaiting a response.
While the Namibia Football Association (NFA) has allowed the team to use its field for training, she noted that the pitch has artificial grass.
“We need to train on natural grass because we are going to play on natural grass at the competition. We have ambitions to go far in this tournament, but we can only perform better if we prepare well with the help of external stakeholders,” she added.

FNB Women Super League champions crowned
The FNB Women Super League concluded on Saturday at the NFA Technical Centre, with the final match of the season between Beauties FC and African Stars Queens ending in a 1–0 victory for Beauties.
With that result, Beauties FC were crowned league champions and walked away with the grand prize of N$250 000. Ongos FC secured second place and received N$150 000, while African Stars Queens finished third, earning N$100 000.
Speaking after the crowning ceremony while the team celebrated, Beauties FC assistant coach Abraham Mwanyekange described the season as a triumph of unity and resilience.
“We are the champions,” Mwanyekange said. “It wasn’t easy. Beauties don’t have a sponsor, so we are on our own. It took more energy, more time to keep these kids together and maintain the unity we emphasised at the start of the league. That’s why we won, because united, we are always victorious.”
With the league title secured, Beauties FC will now represent Namibia in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Mwanyekange appealed to potential sponsors to support the team on its next journey.
“Yes, we are still waiting for those who want to sponsor Beauties FC. We’re going to the Champions League, so if you’re proud of what Beauties is doing and you want to see women’s football in Namibia go far, please come forward and sponsor us. We’re going to represent not just Beauties, but the whole country.”
Reflecting on the overall level of the league this season, Mwanyekange praised the growing quality and urged the public to give the women’s game more support.
“There’s quality here, these women are playing real football,” he said. “These ladies are hungry, and they want to showcase their talent. So next season, come out and watch them play. Come support us in the Champions League too.”
The 2023/24 season also marked the end of First National Bank (FNB) Namibia’s initial three-year sponsorship of the Women Super League. FNB Retail Banking chief executive Nangula Kauluma says the bank was proud of the progress made through its N$2.5 million annual investment.
“This has been a fantastic partnership,” Kauluma says. “It’s wonderful to see the turnout, the energy of men, women, children and everyone out here enjoying the beautiful game. We’re pleased.”
She emphasises the broader impact of FNB’s involvement in grassroots sport development.
“We are a listed entity and custodian of people’s deposits, so we take investments like these seriously. It’s about building future athletes and building Namibia from the ground up.”
While the three-year contract has now ended, Kauluma confirms that negotiations are ongoing.
“That would be telling,” she says. “All I’ll say for now is that discussions are under way, you’ll just have to stay tuned.”
Namibia Football Association (NFA) spokesperson Isaack Hamata also confirms the ongoing negotiations between the NFA and FNB, stressing how vital continued investment is for the growth of the women’s game.
“We’re thankful that FNB has not just shut the door on us,” Hamata says. “Yes, discussions are happening, and we are hoping for an improved purse. Most of our players, even those playing for Windhoek-based teams, come from outside the capital. That means high costs for transport, accommodation, meals and even sanitary pads. These are currently being carried by club owners, so more funding would ease that burden.”
Hamata adds that increased sponsorship would not only improve the standard of the game but also uplift player morale and help close the gap between men’s and women’s football in the country.
“We’re still a distance away, but not a far distance anymore. If we secure that sponsorship, I’m confident our women’s football will grow in leaps and bounds.”
